Hi. I am in the process of replacing the crazed acrylic lenses on my Portlights. My boat has 10 x Lewmar Old Standard fixed Portlights in the main cabin - 4 x size 0 opening and 6 x size 2 fixed Portlights. It is easy to replace the lenses on the opening Portlights but I am considering replacing them with toughened glass. My local glass company can, I am sure, make them to size but has anyone else done this and are there any significant downsides (providing adequately toughened glass is used of course.) Regarding the fixed Portlights, I would like to convert them to opening Portlights so I need 6 lewmar old standard replacements. I check eBay regularly (and managed to get 2 of the size 0 opening Portlights off eBay) - can anyone advise where I can buy these replacements (new) and any idea what the cost is? I got a quote for refurbishment from one of the three UK companies that advertise doing this and it was £62 per portlight plus vat and carriage. I would not completely rule that out but prefer to change them to opening Portlights if possible. If I go down the replacement route, can anyone recommend a refurbishing company on the east coast - I head there was one based in the Southminster area, so if I can get a local firm to refurb them at a fair price then I would consider that. Again, is it possible to replace with glass instead of acrylic? Thanks in advance for any advice.
On a totally separate note, I replaced one portlight and used butyl tape to bed it down. I can only advise anyone considering this that i found it much much easier than messing about with silicone or similar. It was very easy to use, compressed easily and was easy to trim the remnants off with a knife. Took less than 10 mins to fit a new portlight and the result is very neat and no leaks. Cost £7 for a 15 metre roll of 9mm x 3mm from rhinosteelcladding2011 on eBay - no link, just a satisfied customer. This size of tape I have found to be right for usual sizes of lewmar portlight.
