Dear All

On my 49 I have a Lewmar Ocean 2 windlass, now 11 years old. In the past I have wondered if the chain slipped under load and the advice from Lewmar was to see if the lower cone was fixed to the shaft as it should be, and if not, get it pressed onto the shaft. I never got round to doing this. More recently the windlass has been sticking and not paying out the chain when the down button was pressed. The advice was to remove the shaft and file out the bearing at the top. All of this sounds simple. In fact the whole thing was a nightmare. Also I found that the lower cone was indeed not fixed to the shaft and for some reason I had a spare lower cone in my box of spares.

It took several days to get it all fixed as everything was stuck with crud. I also needed the help of engineers to press the cone onto the shaft and get the key out of the shaft.

To help anyone who ever has to take apart their windlass and get the shaft out I am attaching explicit instructions. Hopefully it will save someone a lot of the pain that I have been through in the past week

Dismantling an Lewmar Ocean 2 Windlass

The message from the Oyster Owner's Group was mine!

Now that I understand how to take apart the windlass I thought that I would put instruction on the group to help others.

Now for the benefit of fellow forumnites, I have put my guide into a dropbox folder here

I hope that this helps others avoid the pain that I went through.

Thanks for that.
