The electric motor on my 30 year old winch needs replacing. The casing has all but rusted through, due to its location sitting below the winch “bridge” on my Dehler 36 cws, The halyard bag that is slung below the bridge keeps the air very damp.

Not surprisingly, Lewmar can’t help with a replacement, but I wondered whether anybody had any success finding a motor manufacturer who can help. My local motor reminders can’t suggest anything.

Happy to spend a few quid on this - I’m looking at £2000 to replace with a new winch, gearbox and motor.

Am I going blind or haven't you told us where you live?

I've found several used Lewmar 43ST winches but they would have been sold a while ago and they were in the US of A

Thanks for these links. I’ll investigate further.

Hello Mark
This was a while ago I realise, hopefully you’ll get this reply.
I’m in the purchase process for D36CWS and I think the motor or gearbox for the CWS winch is pretty tired - it’s very noisy. Did you find a solution for yours? Our boat will also be Solent based.
Thanks, Richard

Rich,

I took the winch motor off (with much language that the Secretary of State for Education would recognise) and took it to Solent Rewinds Ltd. It cost me £600 to “Dismantle D.C motor, inspect, test and report. Strip and rewind armature, test and impregnate. Remove old insulation from field coils and re-tape. Skim and undercut commutator. Supply and fit 1 new bearing. Refurbish brush gear. Clean all parts. Reassemble motor, test and paint.” At the same time I replaced the air pressure switches with windlass foot switches (not Lewmar). It has worked well ever since.

Good luck with the purchase. This site (translated) Marina-Team is a wealth of information and they supplied the new rudder and bearings that my surveyor said was needed.

There is also a Facebook page that is useful from time to time Dehler 36 CWS Eigner & Segler | Facebook

Mark thank you, that’s very helpful. I’m aware of the Marina Team site but the Dehler FB is a new one for me so that’ll be handy. I feared having to buy a new power winch from Lewmar so promising that the motor can be refurbished. I hope the gearbox is ok (where the horizontal drive from the motor turns to vertical for the winch) as I’m not sure yet where the noise is coming from. Good tip on the switches as I’ve noticed the air pressure ones are no longer available.

See you around the Solent some time perhaps - we’ll be based in Cowes.

i‘m moored at Wicor in Portsmouth Harbour, so Cowes is a frequent stop, but I’m wondering about further afield next year. We got as far as the Isles of Scilly in 6 days this summer and then spent another 6 coming back. My thought is why come back when I could head north, get to Scotland in the same amount of time and spend a season up there to see whether I like it.
