I need to dismantle a S/T Lewmar 30 winch to get at the mounting bolts. This usually involves removing a circlip but does not apply to this model. Is there something about striking the winch handle when it is in the socket??

Greatful for any ideas.

Lewmar 30 Winch

IIRC there is a plate on the top of the winch with two "tear-drop" shapes in it; I used to put a screwdriver blade in one of these shapes (protected by a piece of cloth) and then gently give it a tap. The plate can then be unscrewed with your fingers and then the ST plastics bits can be removed, and after the barrel of the winch can be lifted offf e.t.c. Be careful not to lose any of the little springs and pawls (I used to put a sheet of plastic around the winch to catch any bits before they disappeared over the side!!!).
If you have a two speed winch (??) you cannot do much with the winch handle ...............

It depends upon the age of the winch (i.e. model of ST30).
As Alan has already mentioned there is the 'Tear' shaped recesses to turn anti-clockwise but this is on newer models.
The older ranges have a plastic disc on top with a couple of screws to remove.

Thanks for the replies. It is an older version of the winch. No teardrops, plastic caps or screws. The current manuals don't mention it. I will try to post photos.

I have these winches on Restless. The top simply unscrews.

I say simply - you need a block of wood against the feed, a hammer, and a deep breath.

Success!!!:D

Thanks for all the advice.

On closer inspection the stripper arm shows the scars of previous encounters with the lump hammer but I was reluctant to just start beating away in case there was some gubbin that I had overlooked.

It is a poor day that you don't learn something new:)
