Letter to RYA re closures

Some reasonable points made on both sides.
At the risk of being that guy that says "cant we just get along guys" it would be better if some people were less emotive.

Many of us have relatives and loved ones putting themselves in harm's way for the greater good.
That does not give us the right to shout down people who express some frustration at the lockdown.

Hang on in there folks.

. . . Lets hang on to that hope - Otherwise the signs are we are all going a bit mad.

Not all. Whilst I've got every sympathy with those who have mental health problems or are confined to a tiny 6th floor apartment with restless kids, etc, a lot of people are not helping themselves cope with all this: Stop counting the days, stop being envious of others, stop reading all the crap on here and elsewhere on the internet.

There is a health issue on the loose that is not comparable with much else in recent times, certainly not cancer or heart disease or other 'killers'. It's highly contagious and has the potential to get out of control. So for the moment, we are being restricted in what we can do. I'm in the finishing stages of my lengthy total refurbishment of my boat and this summer was going to be 'splash time'. Six glorious weeks of perfect weather have slipped by. Annoying but really not much more. And in the greater scheme of things?

If going to your boat is the only life satisfying thing that's propping up your existence - then I'm sorry for you. There really is more to life than boats (and that's from someone who owes every working and most leisure moments to them).

I stand to gain nothing by people who normally work on their own boats having to stay at home, they'll just wait until restrictions are lifted and carry on working on their boats as normal.

How unsporting of them. I'm paying the yard my boat's in to do some work on her when they can.

Besides, if was trying to get more work, i'd hardly be likely to be posting wiring schematics on here and giving people step by step guidance on how to wire their own boats.

If you weren't a helpful poster I wouldn't in turn be trying to help you avoid looking bad.

Actually, I find the comparison quite interesting. Cancer kills 165,000 people per year in the UK and heart disease kills 170,000. Like COVID-10, both hasten the ends of a lot of very old people, but many of these deaths are significantly early and these far exceed (I hope) the likely effects of CV. I hope that when this dies down public health gets taken more seriously in general, both with better education and better care for these conditions.

CV deaths in the UK look likely to pass 22,000 in the next couple of days. That's about the same number of people who are estimated to die annually (not compressed intoa few weeks) from the effects of air pollution and primarily PM2.5 from diesel engines. That' sneeds dealt with too.

You are tsalking about CV deaths in hospital, perhaps best to make that clear. Total CV deaths are much higher
Yes, good point. On the other hand, a large number of the people would have died now or soon anyway. It's going to take a very long time to get an accurate idea of how many people die from it and how many years of life are lost as a result.

My request to the RYA, the yard and the Government is to act proportionately. That should be the watchword of all policymaking.
As a recently retired Safety Engineer I have dealt with things that can have the potential to kill many thousands of people. Proportionality is a difficult thing to get right and I would be interested to hear the parameters you would consider to pass the Daily Mail test.

It's 'only' 22,000 because of the restrictions. Without them it has the potential to be 2,000,000.

Comparisons with the other bad societal 'killers' are irrelevant. It's true, as a society, we could choose to do more about them, but they are at a level the taxpayers are 'comfortable' with. And even with our levels of intervention are unlikely to get out of hand.

Using such comparisons as a lever to go sailing is highly suspect.

Not really - we can easily see how many more people have died this April compared to previous years for the same month. According to the ONS it's running somewhere around 17,000 over and above the normal death rate.

BUT and it is a big but, the previous months were running below average. nature does have a way of leveling over a year.

Not quite, but I have ended up living in my crew's attic room due to some spectacular timing (one boat in a non liveaboard brokerage marina, the other in the channel islands). It's a good job they like my cooking.

It looks like the risks are now acceptable in the construction industry. TW are back next week and I’ve just an email from one of my MDs with return to work dates of the 11th and 18th of May. Risk assessments drawn up and ready to be implemented although it will not be practical for some trades to work alone or distance themselves.
With most trades being self employed I believe this is a risk they are willing to take. It will only take one unknown carrier not to follow the rules then we will be back to square one.

And transmission by contact with infected surfaces seems to be at the moment a hypothetical possibility only.

Never realised we had an expert virologist on this forum.

It looks like some on here really need to go to the covid pages on the lounge , were the discussions are really based on science and some good reports , emotional responses to this will always make people more angry ,and inflate figures and use headlines like Killer virus etc .
Emotional responses will not get this country back on its feet nor spurting some rubbish,
One third of Deaths in Scotland were in the care homes a fail , the rest had all some form of other conditions that they died from the majority with heart issues.
The constant fear on this thread is shocking and people really need to read the facts , get informed , get the statistics from the OFNS and stop reading the Daily mail
This virus will kill, 2017 to 2018 the Flu virus killed over 26000 people not a peep on it from anyone.

I agree with everything you said.

As the OP can I remind everyone that: all I did was suggest some lobbying of the RYA to adjust their guidance regarding interpretation of the guidelines. I haven't suggesting sailing. I haven't suggested anyone act irresponsibly; I was very clear that social distancing guidelines can be observed and that yards and owners should exercise local discretion as how to go about it. Nor did I say, as one of you excitable types suggested, that I or anyone else would bring the children.

Those who have said "I'd like to visit my boat too, or go and see friends" miss the boat entirely. The former is lower risk, the latter is higher risk, as regards transmission.

Please, either copy my note to the RYA, or pipe down.

No they are not, they can go to work, but that's it, no additional "out and about", above what everyone is else allowed to do.

I'm still able to work. I won't work on liveaboard boats or boats where the owner is onboard and i won't work on boats where anyone has been onboard in the last three days. I, and the small group of people who also work in the marinas or live there/stuck there, would rather other people didn't come and play on their boats, risking bringing the virus here.

The person at the supermarket checkout would probably prefer that people stayed at home as much as possible, reducing the risk of giving them Corona viruse to take home to their families.

The NHS staff would probably prefer it if as many people as possible didn't catch Corona virus and expose them and their families to it.

etc
etc
etc

So I have a couple of jobs that I need a contractor to do.. the yard won't allow that either. It sounds as though wherever you are has a different view, would you mind letting me know where it is?

I work in most of the East coast marinas, some are still allowing contractors on site, others are not. Some are completely closed.
