I know that commercial ships are not allowed to put any more than 15ppm (parts per million) oil over the side with bilge water and rumoured to be going to Zero ppm for Uk waters.
Does the same rule apply to please craft?
If so how it policed?
What devices are there that can be fitted to prevent oil going out with the water?

<font color=blue>I use pads about 1 foot square which cost about 15p each (I think) from Marlec Marine in Ramsgate. These soak up every last iota of oil leaving pure water. I inderstand these can be washed out and reused but as they are so cheap I just renew them when they look too grubby.
As for the first part of your posting 'don't know'

Well. My two bilge pumps are automatic and hopefully they have been doing their job all winter. Presumably all the other boats in the marina have been doing the same. Else. Marina poluted by hundreds of sunken boats.

I thought it was part of the BSS that bilge water couldn't be pumped overboard from the enging compartment. Thats on the inland side of things. Actually , if I remember rightly, the By Laws of the PHC say that not polluted water can be pumped out. Don't know if thats applicable out side their limits. Don't help really does it, I'll shut up!

This VETUS separator collects and retains oil and grease from the bilge water.
The filter element is replaceable and has a capacity of 320 grams, which is the average quantity of oil in 8.000 litres of bilge water. The bilge pump to be used in combination may have a maximum capacity of 20 litres/minute.
The connections are for ø 19 mm hoses.
