Well here goes.

1.-How often do you guys service your outdrives? Having only ever hired shaft driven boats we know next to nothing about outdrives. We have the volvo penta duo props. They were serviced when we bought the boat. When would they need doing next?

2.-How often do you do a full service? We were planning on doing the intermediate oil and filter changes ourselves but paying our marina to do the full service. We were told when we bought the boat this would be every two years but have since been told otherwise. Again it had a full service with all belts and oils changed when we bought it. Oh should add its a KAD32.

I think thats it for now but im sure there will be more later.

welcome to the forum,
We opened up a file recording service details , hours etc , so you estabish a record system for yourself & also a detailed service history when you go to trade up , which you will do.
So starting at your purchase service , how many hours on engines / bellows last changed / oil change to leg etc/ anodes
last changed , we check as follows;
(a) bellows every two years
(b) belts every 100 hours
(c) impeller every 100 hours
(d) anodes when 60% wasted
(e) oil every year
(f) filters every 2nd year
(g) fuel filters every year
This is our guide and other members will have a different opinion so get a cross section of views.
Good luck

Ok, so another couple of differing views.

We were planning on changing the engine oil and filter every 100 hours (almost due now). We keep a few spare impellors as we have already used two (picking up crap in the river) the rest we were going to leave until the major service at two years. We were going to leave the outdrive for two years as well. Being the majority of our use will be rivers we thought that would be OK.

The advantage of at least changing the outdrive oil every year is that if you've picked up some fishing line or something that has damaged the seals and is letting the water in (milky oil), you'll be able to spot it that much earlier.

A compromise would be to drain off / check / top up a tiny bit at the start of each season, then change it every second season.

Belts should easily last two years if pottering around the river.

Roughly how many hours did you do last season?

dv.

As you are berthed in Fresh water but use in salt water have you thought about the type of anode to use ?

There are three types

Zinc for salt but no use in fresh

Magnesium for fresh but fizz away in salt in no time

Aluminium for mixed , if Volvo make aliminium ones then they may be the best option for you.

I used to use Zinc as aluminium didnt used to be made by Volvo, and had to wire brush them on a regular basis.

perhaps you should check what is on there now.

We have only had her 5/6 months so not sure of our hourly useage yet. We have almost done 100 hours so far but that is winter use so remains to be seen what we do this summer. Bought it as a low hours example but i dont think it will be when we have done with it.

The anodes were changed to magnesium as they had been zinc even though the boat has rarely been to sea. Something the surveyor picked up.

Hi & welcome,
S28 has got it about right, however i think belts should last a little longer if the pulleys are in good condition, regards m m 1.
