In the US, Clorox make a product called Lestoil which is a combination of hydro-carbons and pine oil.

It is an excellent multipurpose cleaner and disinfectant, particularly good at removing grease, from marks on clothes to cleaning the engine compartment - as I proved this morning, the bilges are now sparkling /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

SWMBO assures me it can't be bought in UK, but does anybody know a similar product?

it seems that Lestoil has loads of white spirit and sodium hydroxide as well as pine oil, so it's going to be very alkaline.

Next time you are in a shop, check out the oven cleaners and similar to see if you can find anything with those components. I suspect that Lestoil is not the kindest of chemical cleaners....

If you want to clean bilges with a modicum of respect for the environment, have alook at

for biological cleaners that really work on grotty bilges, diesel soaked timber etc.
