Well. I am in two minds as to post this or not as i am sure we will get the usual people on to me about my lack of seamanship in the usual theme of this forum. that said, if one person benefits then its worth the flack!

As most of you know, we have a new boat and despite it being on the water for a few weeks SWMBO had not been out on it yet and was getting itchy feet!

The plan was set, dogs to the kennels saturday morning, berth booked at Cowes. left home berth about 13.00 on saturday and headed out for a little play and into cowes, no problems, alongside and a lovely evening was had.

Woke on Sunday to heavy rain (as forecast) but light winds. We had planned to leave Cowes about 4 is to arrive back at our berth at slack tide in an attempt to ease my berthing nerves.

As the morning progressed the rain cleared, sky brightened and wind stiffened. We left Cowes about 3 in the end as the wind was clearly building.

As we left the Medina and into the Solent it was clear it was not going to be a smooth crossing . South Westerly 5 ish and pretty confused seas. gently lifted onto the plane and everything seemed ok, until i completely misjudged a beam sea and landed hard. i can still hear the cry of pain from SWMBO.

Slowed right down so i could find out what was happening... in the hard landing her elbow had landed on the mounting point for the campa cover. no claret but clearly a huge amount of pain, not able to move the arm, grip or even make a fist.

Continued at displacement speed until we could turn to run with the seas and make it a little more comfortable for her. as we entered the Hamble she was just about getting some movement back but in a great deal of pain and clearly not capable of crew duties.

Full credit to the guys at Mercury. Called them as we came up the river to ask if someone could take our lines, they offered us any berth we liked and put two guys on the pontoon to assist us in..

so....

Dont be afraid to change plans if your gut (not to mention circumstantial evidence) is telling you its the right thing to do.

Better to fight the tide than the wind.

direct route is not always the best route

Sat here this morning knowing that my decisions have damaged SWMBO both physically and in confidence. no one to blame but me!

Safe boating people!

I think the soft side of swmbo management might need a bit more than "end of".

At the moment, Mrs Zippy has the association: Boat = Poorly Elbow

Sunday afternoon was showing as F6-7 on Chimet.

Pah. Hope the elbow gets better.
I know of worse.......
potted version:

new boat imported form states. Launched, leaking badly, had been dropped en route and antifouled over to hide the damage.

engine out, repairs made, rebuilt, summer nearly gone. 1st trip was going to happen whatever the weather.

1st trip i was with them, was their 3rd boat but the fastest by far. Down soton water, 40+, big grins. Big wave/wake by calshot, "throttle back" i say, multiple times, increasingly loudly! Bang, airborne, landed.

Big ouch from Mrs boat owner. Got her back, she went to work the next day in pain. 3 days later pain too much went to hospital, and this lady never moans about anything.

They kept her in, she had left the seat and hit it as the boat bottomed. Her back was fractured and they warned the wrong movement could paralyse. She spent 6 weeks in a brace.

Her back recovered but they now have a semi displacement boat.
THIS COULD BE YOUR FATE!!

Next 3 trips flat calm and if not 6 knots max. But you know that. :)
Hope her elbow gets better soon.

Yesterday was a bit lumpy but it all depends on the boat. We didn't go out but we're a lot smaller than you. Hope she recovers OK and forgives you eventually.

We were in the Blue Star cafe at about 16:15 and saw a Hunton trundling up river, I wondered it it was you. Looking good :)

Thanks for your comments.

hindsight is 20 / 20 and we should have left earlier but ho humm. as i say, unless we learn its a pointless exercise posting and sharing!

It was a little lumpy but not it any way rough and the boat handled it perfectly. i just put it in the wrong place at the wrong time! i know that, as soon as it went up i knew it was going to be hard. i guess if her arm had been forward by 3 inches it would have landed softly and we would be non the wiser!

When things settled down we were able to make reasonable speed without Mrs Zippy being in any discomfort despite the injury so can say 100% user error!

i just to a text from her saying she had a lovely weekend and still loves the boat so thats good news!

Yup, that would have been us going up the river at that time!

Whenever my SWMBO hurts herself on the boat, my first thought is to wonder whether she's damaged the boat. Is this wrong?

Just goes to show, yachts are safer. ;)

Pah! Last time I was on a yot I broke two pairs of glasses and had to drive home with one lense sellotaped to my head.

Seriously, I'm glad Mrs Z has kept her sense of humour and hope there's no lasting harm done.

Seriously though, these things can happen to the best of us I reckon, hope injury heals quicky and confidence is restored asap.

Well, I nearly put SWMBO off sailing for life by wanting to use the boat as soon as we got it - we went cruising at Easter on the River Dee (exposed to he NW & with big tides). Trying to find shelter behind Hilbre Island (there is none there as the waves bend round the island & hit you broadside) she had to deal with 2 kids feeling seasick & needing the loo below. She lost her balance & landed badly on her knee which to this day still gives her problems.

Fortunately, I found there is shelter in Dutchman's Gut as the tide ebbs & we all went ashore on the bank to see the seals. If there hadn't been a highlight to the weekend I may never have got her back on the boat.

Yachts may be slower, but there are different risks - especially when downwind & rolling in a seaway. We had a nice jolly sail the other day Philiz, but downwind sailing can be risky which is why people rig boom preventers to stop an accidental gybe - remember we were "tacking" down wind? That was to minimise the risk of an accidental gybe.

Yep, used a preventer on Providence, I reckon that boom would smart a bit!

I thought we were just tacking to practice rope pulling :p

thats a great result.

Boating doesnt always go as planned and you dealt with it well, you asked for help and got it , turning the tragedy into a manageable situation with sympathy :)
