Leros marina sail repair

Had a small tear (0.5m) in the main repaired by them last year (May 2013).
Happy with quality of the work and the price (cant remember what it was but it wasnt bad)
They also spent an hour (2 men) sorting out my jammed mainsail but didnt charge for it.

How about 1000 Euros for replacing a UV strip , a leech cord and a bit of reinforcing at the clew on a genoa in cluding materials on a 9 m catamaran . Is that reasonable ?

They started up their own sail loft in the marina this year. I understand that the quality of work of the new man is pretty good. We had a winter cockpit cover made by the man in town, his quality was good but he was difficult to communicate with. The marina marked up his price by 15%.

Price sounds high to me. Try discussing with Nikos, when I complained over a ridiculous price for tapping one hole, he halved it.

Presumably he came to the marina to measure up so that's when they took opportunity to charge but if the mountain comes to Mohammed in a car then they can't surely charge or does he have an obligation to inform?
I agree communication is a problem but does he do a good job and can he get the right materials etc ?

I don't know if he is there in the winter but all through the season the security man in the box at the gate keeps a record of cars entering and leaving, and will challenge known contractors. In general Evros arrange sales with external contractors through the office, e.g. galvanising, window repairs, woodwork, etc. The contractor doesn't know what is being charged. When the sailmaker found out what was being charged for his work he decided to opt out and run from his own premises.

People I know who have bought batteries in town have them delivered to the gate, then take a trolley there to collect. I know several people who bought from the sailmaker in town this year, took their boats over to the town quay to collect. The shop is in one of the roads parallel with the promenade, maybe two roads back.

His materials are excellent, our winter cover is very substantial.

Most lofts charge by the length of luff and foot - my 312 ft2 genoa will cost €259 + € 130 for new UV and new foam luff. The latter is in line with the price Paul Lees charges. This price direct with the sailmaker in Kavala and he's throwing in a wash. His comments on having to work on such a filthy sail were pretty unprintable, even if I had a Greek keyboard.
So I'd say you're being charged x3 the going rate.
However you have to always bear in mind, and suffer, the island premium.

That's what I thought . In fact when I contacted the UK manufacturer of my old sale he quoted me just that for a 275 sq ft sail so it would even be economicl to bring it back to UK as hold baggage as it weighs just 11kg get it done and return with it to the boat
However I am now thinking about getting a new one instead

I've used the guy in the back road in Leros for repair and he did an ok job and cheap as chips. I was on the town key, went to find/see him and lent me his car to go bring the sail, he gave us beers and a meze while we waited. Speaks very little english though.
