I have seen, on a Dutch barge being single handed, what appeared to be a continuous line between bow and stern cleats which on elntering the lock was dropped over appropriate bollards, the central slack was then taken up. to control the boat. Seemed effective but must have been a pain going upstream, maybe not used that way I guess.

We use the sliders in the Trent lock walls, saves having to have stupidly long ropes :)

We currently have a set of 4No. 10m long ropes fitted but have found that they can be a little on the short side at times, especially if rafted three or four deep so we also carry a couple of 15m long ropes in the anchor locker.

We are changing our ropes this year and plan to buy a set of 4No. 12m ropes that are not quite so hefty. Our current 10m ropes are quite thick (14mm 3 strand), not a problem with our cleats but can become a problem when rafted if the adjacent boat only has piddly mooring hardware!!

And the locks on the Trent without sliders eg West Stockwith(well worth a weekend visit by the way, the boat club there is great)

We have been to West Stockwith, the boat club as you say is well worthy of a visit as is the pub adjacent the River Idle (the name eludes me at the moment must be old age setting in!!) Didnt have an issue with the 10m ropes nor at Keadby, did have trouble with the locals at Keadby though, they wouldnt let us leave the pub (The Auld South Yorkshire)

Being a newbie I thought of giving my elders and betters the the benefit of the doubt, but I have learnt my lesson.

Travelling downstream put the extension on once secured alongside.

Any other posts will spell out things that are too difficult for you, I promise.

Any more clues? Does your mention of Henley in a previous post, and Marlow and Boulters narrow things down a bit? And who is 'Pete" ?

You miss my point -

  1. Any knot, or even an indifferent splice is, by the Law of Sod, bound to catch round the bollard when you pull the line through.
  2. You'd be very lucky to be able to flick the line off cleanly if you are very much below the level of the lockside, and especially if you're using nice soft rope. Even so (1) above will conspire to defeat you.
  3. No probs going uphill you can lean over to detach the assembly.
  4. Methinks some of the more senior lockies would object to any form of lumpy rope. I've been castigated for looping a line round a T-bollard and over one of the horizontal bits (?name). So any complex arrangement such as Andrew suggests (what is he talking about ??) would be out of court.

SO it was a post meant seriously.

I am not going to get in a cyber row.

I have been using this method for some 25 years, and have never had a "stoppage". Neither have I had a complaint from a Lockie, senior or otherwise.

Like I said, Staff Answer. And I am not EA.
