What are these boats like? I have only ever seen a few of them for sale so I take it they are pretty uncommon. Just wondered if anyone has owned or been in one?

Thanks,
Mike:D

Do you mean a Leisure 17? Had one thirty years ago and it taught me everything I know about sailing. Terrific little boat that feels like a full sized yacht.

I have never seen an 18! I have owned two Leisure 17s and a Leisure 20 though. Really wanted a 23sl but could only afford a 22 so that ended my affair with Leisures!

Great fun boats and even on a 17 you could sleep 4!

Cheers

Paul

Leisure 18..........

Perhaps someone has added a bowsprit for their assymetric. Joking apart they are a good small boat. One of my first 'big boat' sailing experiences.Bilge keels and easily towed on a trailer. I think the Sunstar is very similar to it. In the 1970's the Leisures,Sunstars and the Caprices together with the Silhouettes and Ballerinas were the start of the sailing boom years, all around 18ft and shallow draft. Most of the fittings are large dinghy sizes so cheap to replace .

A new builder, Cory Yachts International Ltd. subsequently continued the Leisure brand with new designs for a Leisure 18 and 24. Sadly very few were produced and due partly to the exorbitant cost of meeting the RCD [Recreational Craft Directive]; they have withdrawn from the market.

I had a Leisure 18 new from Brian Cory Yachts in 1995, good little boat and was my first forray into yachts from dinghies. Sailed well and was very well built, Interior was very good and useable, I had the layout with the toilet compartment which was very small but ok. Engine was housed in Starboard locker be careful here though as the space was very tight, I had a Suzuki 6 if I remember right, it just fitted. You cannot tilt the engine clear of the water so you either antifoul it or lift it out when you leave.

Corys are a father and son team, the son designed the 18 after they bought the Leisure name, interesting to deal with but ok. Not sure if they are still trading.

All in all I enjoyed the 18 and had some good fun in her.

I have just stumbled across this thread and thought that you may like to know that we recently bought the moulds and design rights for the Leisure 18 and intend to put this super little boat back into production.

Less than twenty Leisure 18's were produced, so they are indeed very rare. Hopefully, they will not be quite so rare in the future!

There is a nice example for sale on Appolo Duck at the moment see http://yachts.apolloduck.com/display.phtml?aid=125624

Nice to hear that someone is developing a boat in the sub-20 foot market. I'm sure that the hole left there after all the rush into 30+ foot "starter" boats is waiting to be filled.
A centreboard, trailer-sailer version would surely be desirable option. A fractional rig with a tabernacle mounted mast and a roller-coaster trailer (or even a piggyback launch trolley on a low-loader trailer) would overcome a lot of the drawbacks of the older trailer-sailers.
I hope it becomes a profitable venture.

That's a good point of Lakesailor's regarding the tabernacle for the mast;it would make it a strong contender for the Broads with small draft and good sailing performance. I look forward to seeing one in the flesh.

A lift keel version is already on the drawing board. The rig is fractional and manufactured by by Z-Spars. The mast will have a tabernacle.
Sails are supplied by Kemp Sails. Winches, blocks, tracks sliders etc are all from Barton.
Thanks for the interest & comments.

I'm intrigued - how do you fit a toilet compartment into an 18 footer?

It was a bit of a tardis although loo was very small it contained a portapoti and was useable but limited headroom. It had canvas door and was to Stbd as you entered cabin. See picture below best I had no digital camera then.

Mark, that is a super little boat. Never seen one before but my kids have just gone "ooh!" when I showed the photo to them :D I'm really pleased you're going to be building them, sorry I'm not in the market for one but agree with the others that it's nice to see a small boat like this back out again.

Do the LOA know about this? Here's the link to their page about the L18 from Brian Cory - http://www.leisureowners.org.uk/site/contents/leisure18_new.shtml - would be nice to see it updated with your info in the near future.

Best wishes and good luck

Neil

Brilliant, after I sold her she was at Ramsholt for a couple of years, chap who bought her was a specialist Rolls Royce dealer and very very fussy. He bought an Etap 21i and I lost track of Miss Clair.

I recognised her from the photos due to the wood pad under the winches, I had to fit them to stop the riding turns.

Its great to hear she's still going strong and well cared for. I have to say I was amazed how well built she was for the money, even down to the Corys pouring molten lead into the keels H&S would have had kittens.
