I've read various and contradictory opinions about whether or not to antifoul an outdrive leg. Mine (Alpha 1, not antifouled) got very weedy this year, leading to rampant paranoia on my part about blocked cooling inlets and the end of the world as we know it, though in practice there were no problems.

Is it advisable to antifoul the leg (avoiding the anodes, of course) or is it better to let well alone, and scrub at regular intervals? I know that there are special outdrive-specific paints and that the surface needs to be etched and undercoated if there is bare aluminium in evidence, but any other opinions/advice/do's and dont's?

I won't be antifouling until Feb/March but I like to consider these things at my leisure.... ;o)

If you are worried about the appearance of your leg (e.g.) Want to keep it looking original, Why not use clear antifoul. Happy1 from this forum uses it, I'm sure a PM to him will reveal the maker of it.

Isn't he a Nigerian gangster?

<hr width=100% size=1>Do you think a Fleming 55 would look out of place on Windermere?

Actually, I think it's the name that Mr Hollamby uses professionally for his appearances as a tapdancer.

(before anybody else says it: did you hear about the Irish Tapdancer who broke his leg in the sink?)

:o)

Yes, you should anti-foul the drive legs. Do this with clear or coloured, as you wish. The thing to do to make a proper job, is to make sure that the hull anti-foul paint doesn't actually meet the leg anti-foul. In other words there is a gap of about 1" all the way round the leg which is showing gelcoat. The reason for this is that it reduces electrical current activity. Talking of which, you should ensure your anodes are in good condition and not more that 30% worn out.

Thanks Dave. Anodes are on the "to do" list already - they definitely need replacement. I think I'll probably go with clear paint, not because I'm worried about aesthetics - I'm not - but I suppose a future purchaser might be. The gap between antifoul on the hull and the outdrive leg already exists, so all I have to do is follow the existing line which even I (Mr DIY disaster) should be able to manage :o)

Beautiful morning down here in the South today, though it's clouding over now. I could have been pottering about on the boat but SWMBO was insistent on a shop and destroy mission. Grrr.
