Leg lifting on its own issue

Hi

Need some help has anyone else have had there drive lift up with out any reason whilst underway. Have volvo kad 42 engines on drives.. last time i was out the port side drive kept on lifting up on its own. pressed the button and dropped it back down no problem. happened about 4 times when out and then just stopped doing it. Does any one know if they have a relay somewhere or could point me in the right direction on why it would do that.

The trim pump will be at the stern of the engine bay and usually to the port side of the engine recognisable as a black electric motor attached to a white translucent reservoir with ATF in it. . Relays will be immediately next to the pump. Perhaps check electrical connections are tight and not corroded.

Must be electrical rather than hydraulic, as when going forward the drives are trying to push down. If they lift when going in reverse then it is likely hydraulic.

I had exactly the same problem on one of my previous boats equipped with twin KAD 42s. The issue was fixed by swapping the up and down relays. Apparently they are identical but the up and down side uses different contacts inside the relay. The problem is caused by the contacs getting stuck when the relay gets older. Sometimes problems has an easy fix... Hope it works for you!

Oh yes you sound like a life saver, just had the feeling of having to empty my wallet of all my hard earned cash to the nice mechanics at the marina to buy them shiny new porches and clad there wives and mistresses in designer shoes :encouragement:
