Leg 2 - Cape Town to Cochin

15 November 2008: Start Time: 13:00 hrs (local time)

When leg two starts from Cape Town the subtropical high should be too far east to impact on this passage to India. The biggest issue, initially, may not be the weather at all, it could be the Agulhas Current, which runs south down the east coast of South Africa. Over the shallows of the Agulhas Bank it meets cold water and the westerly winds coming the other way from the Southern Ocean. The result is a notoriously rough piece of water.

Once they’ve negotiated this, the teams will be racing to be first into the south-east trade winds, which should be settled and blowing by the time they reach Mauritius. The trades will take them into the Doldrums, and then it is going to be tricky most of the way to Kochi. Any wind on the chart is predominantly a light westerly until the Maldives, but north of that all bets are off.

If you don't get any better offer, I'll start your boat off. PM me your password if you want me to do it for you.

Would you sail my boat for me for the whole of leg 2, as I don't seem to be compentent enough to be allowed out at sea on my own! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Many years ago when I navigated BP Tankers around the place some Captains wanted to go in so close to South Africa to avoid the Agulhas current that you could wave to people on the beach. The alternative was to go way offshore as there were reports of freak waves on the edge of the current and a number of ships were lost or severely damaged.
You be careful out there!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

OK! OK! Get in line and wait your turn.

Seriously though, If anyone wants a co-skipper let me know. I don't know how many boats I can handle at a time and there may be a conflict of interest. I will be fair to everybody. You will all end up an equal distance behind me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeap, have done that, one of our sister ships at the time had the company record for a gulf to gulf trip, they got 3 / 4 knots extra for quite a few days.

Thankfully there's no tide in SOL, we have enough problems without adding more /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think you will do better than my 11 year old son who is being left with his gran, anyway if you don't get to shoot anyone or blow them up he's not really interested.
At least I will have 3 days at the helm before I go.

If you can't handle all the boats that your offering to skipper, I'm Happy to assist with one if anyone is prepared to trust me. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I still think it would be a good idea to enter a 'ybw' boat, and see if having people helming it non stop through the day and night, as and when people are available,or up mid morning making course changes to their own boats. It would be interesting to see how successful that would be.

Good Idea Brendan.

All yours boys. (and Girls)

The Augustimanen Race looks too complicated for me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The umpire will be announcing different courses for different boats during the race. I might be asleep. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If I log on using the YBW boat, I can see what colour ybwDipper is! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And vice versa (can I say that or is Latin banned?). The YBW boat is a girlie pink/purple.
