I have heard more than a couple of times now that in certain parts of the Greek Islands you can pay a local to look after your boat when not there. For example when we were last in Nidri a liveaboard next to us on the town quay said he moored there for a year for free & paid a local guy to look after the boat when he wasn't there. Also heard the same story from a couple in Skopelos too on a free swinging mooring. Anyone any info or is this very risky?

There are quite a lot of places where the boat can be left afloat, free of charge and well sheltered. However, very few of these places have electricity, and you will have to make a suitable moorng arrangement or tie alongside with some very good fendering.

More secure is to pull out or crane out into some of the local authority owned harbours - often uncompleted marinas, or marinas awaiting further investment from an operator or entrepeneur. Again, there are often no charges for the shore storage, though the lift out/drop in will cost the crane, around €300 plus or minus a few inches.

Many sea-oriented locals speak good English. Nidri/Levkas area is almost a little England - lots of ex-pat brits around there. I parked several boats bows onto the mud just opposite Nidri in Tranquil bay one winter. Two anchors each, lines ashore, no cost, except a weekly check around the bilges. Batteries were taken out and stored ashore, charged monthly.

Also consider Pylos. Nicos in the chandlery above will keep an eye on the boat (speaks fluent American).

More ideas on my website.

This month we met a guy on Paxos who keeps his boat in Nidri. For EUR 1800 a year, he gets gardiennage (incl running engine once a week), lift out/lift in and antifouling.
