Hi everyone we have been unable to be on site for quite a while as no internet access. Here we are now in LEFKAS Marina. Can any one give advice if this is a good place to winter in? are there many liveaboards here in winter, does any one organise a nett, are there any places that do proper english Christmas Dinners. A lot of questions but please help. Are their any liveaboards who will be coming here for winter, if so please contact us.

Many thanks

Peter and Claire

Lefkas is a very popular wintering place. It was featured in an article on the subject in PBO a couple of years ago. The authors said there were about 40 permanent boats and all the sorts of things you mentioned going on.

Lefkas as you have probably already discovered is a biggish town, not totally dependent on the tourist trade. There is quite a significant resident ex-pat population. Good links with Athens by bus twice a day.

Probably only downside is that the marina has become very expensive compared with the alternatives such as Preveza and Messolonghi. However, more overall winter activity than either of those.

All that tranona says I endorse. However, since there are flights from Corfu to Athens all year that link with flights to the UK - see Olympicair.com and the berthing prices are cheaper than Levkas for a marina operated by the same company, I don't see why Levkas would be preferable. Corfu has all that you seek with much greater variety than Levkas. We have been here since 2004.

Hi Charles, well we have heard that Corfu is the Island that has the most rain during the winter period. We realy do not want that kind of weather and we have no interest in flights to Athens or the UK. Thanks for the info.We shall be sailing/motoring up that way to explore.

levkas

I'm planning to be in Levkas Marina for the winter. I may also spend time down in Vliho (resident population of liveaboards at anchor etc there), but use the marina as the base.

We have friends who have just been to Messolonghi... decided on their experience to not go there (besides which i guess its full!). I don't fancy gouvia... levkas town looks great and I'm making good contacts here already.

BTW...I suspect levkas has not much less rain than gouvia.... the penalty for having a green island!

Yes, there is not much difference in rainfall or temperature - plus in Levkas you have the added bonus of the odd earthquake to keep you awake. Levkas has a certain charm that is missing in Corfu. Do make sure you get around the island. Like Corfu there are some spectacular sites in the hills and on the west coast.

I think you`ll enjoy Levkas ,stayed there a couple of years ago now ,it`s fine and the staff are excellent also.
What was it that put your friends off Messolonghi recently ?

Thanks.

Re. Messolonghi: My friends were looking for a place to leave their boat over the winter on the hard- they were not intending to live aboard there for much of the winter. A couple of weeks ago (when they called there) the hard standing was still being created, and it was very dusty and messy. They reported that boats already on the hard didnt look particularly well cradled/supported and some were at odd angles. They didn't feel confident that the boat would be safe. They've chosen to leave it in Preveza instead.

Last winter was a spectacularly wet one for the whole Ionian, not just Corfu.

Thanks for all the info every one. we had a good look round and like LEFKAS MARINA. Met a lot of people allready and all friendly and helpfull. The place at the moment is FULL of charter yachts so busy. Hopefully we shall be able to negotiate a better price structure for the winter. We hope to stay from Mid Dec to mid March or April depending on weather. We met you in Almerimar Carol (wildbird)

Peter
