LED\'s for Internal Lighting

Has anybody fitted led lights in the saloon and gained better lighting than the normal festoon type. If so, can you please let me know which sort you have fitted.

Many thanks,

Re: LED\'s for Internal Lighting

the light is more of a blue/white and not as bright, for reading they need to be closer, but they are easy on the battery. jave several red led lights for night use, purchased from truck supply as side marker lights for about $10 each and couple 5led overheads for gen cabin lighting. would prob keep a std light in chart area. DAVIS makes a conversion bulp that just replaces reg bulbs at about $38. each. right now they won.t give that warm cabin feeling you may be used to.

Made my own ....

Didn't bother with a luxeon array. Used a 5 x 5mm x 50 degree festoon and a wpm plus individual dimming mosfet circuit. Total cost for 5 lights £37.20. [Some Maplin parts, Some RS parts and some parts from the USA] Total wattage when they are ALL on is still less than 2 watts as compared to 50 watts previously. Splash a smidgeon of clear yellow on the lens to change the blue cast to a warmer colour temperature.

Also made a combined tricolour/ARW for £24.83 to fit into an Aquasignal combined. The viewing distance for the worst case ie red is 3.8 miles.

Re: LED\'s for Internal Lighting

Thanks for your replies. This confirms the experiments I have tried. ie Not a lot of illumination and an eery blue cast to the light. Thought maybe I was using the wrong led's and that someone had found suitable ones to replace the normal cabin lights with an equivalent effect.

Will keep on looking, there must be something out there with all the technology we have.

Re: LED\'s for Internal Lighting

I have fitted them in saloon and forecabin and like them.
They are a smart, unobtrusive, modern plastic unit made by Ffrensch - which is a German company and I ordered them at the boat show. They do a matching halogen for reading.
I like them and have had complementary remarks on them.
Their Nav table light has red and stand-by lighting included and I have not yet used this in earnest, so reserve my judgement.
Not cheap.

12 volts Compact Flourescent Lamps (CFL) ie same as "energy saving" bulbs, are available, but unfortuanely few and far between and expensive when you do find them.

If anyone knows of a reasonably priced source, I would be interested to hear.
