I had a thought about connecting my cockpit LED strip via a usb connector but the chap in Maplins said usb connectors are only 5 volts? Is that correct? If so how do car and boat usb ports get around the 12v feed they have?

As said the standard USB power outlet provides 5v in the case of the plug into car type there is a power converter in the plug.
Most LED strips run on 12v so will not run on a USB type power source. However there is no reason why you can not use a USB plug and socket for power connection to the 12v battery system except that other people might be tempted to plug say a phone charge cable into the socket only to smoke the phone on 12v instead of 5v. So best use any other kind of plug and socket. Preferably water proof type. olewill
