I had occasion to have all of the interior lights on the boat on at the same time over the weekend and was horrified that the power consumption was over 30 amps. They are a standard halogen fitting that takes a 12v bulb.

Does anyone know if there is a direct led replacement?

Yes, but they cost a fortune! About £10-12 each for 15mm twin contact bayonet bulbs. Look on e-bay. You can also get single contact bulbs, and twin pin ones as well as the tubular "fuse-like" ones that I can't remember the name of.

I seem to recall slightly mixed comments on here, but I have generally had good servi e from Ultraleds - they do direct replacements for G4 halogen bulbs. Very low wattage and bright enough. The voltage stabilised ones are around £10 each though.

We have also changed the 60 W of nav lights for leds, 2W each for Hella Naviled Pro 2Nm rated - but these will skin you alive on price.

I think "festoon" may be the term you are looking for.

Thank you, my Altzheimer's helmet has not arrived yet; I may have forgotten to tell them my address . . .

is it bright enough to read by

[/ QUOTE ] They quote 400 lumens and claim it is the equivalent of an 80watt bulb. Could you read by the light of an 80watt bulb just above head height. I think I could.

Anyone tried the search function???

[/ QUOTE ] No I've read all the previous posts on the subject. (Thats how I know the urls of those sources.) I dont want to read them all again.

Anyway it slows the forum down for everyone else and if it gets much slower than it been going at times it'll be going backwards and we'll all be getting our old posts back again.

These do not state their voltage range - one of the good things about the ultraleds are that they operate on 8v - 30v, so the bulbs aren't damaged by 14.4volt alternator boosters or low voltage in emergencies - this is apparently one of the big causes of LED failure.

8v - 30v,

[/ QUOTE ] I think the downside of such a wide voltage range may be that the current consumption is high.

When I compared Ultraleds with Doctorleds for replacement bulbs for a tricolour light IIRC I found that while the Ultraleds ones operated over a very wide voltage range (unnecessarily so from my point of view) the Doctorleds ones took a much smaller current for a similar light output but operated over a narrower, but IMO adequate, voltage range.

Worth checking out if the current drawn is critical.

If you purchase from UltraLeds, be sure to check the guarantee period. Just over a year ago, I purchased 3 voltage regulated cabin bulbs , but didn't fit them until last April. Two failed after very few hours operation. My complaint drew the curt reply that they were only guaranteed for 3 months. Their after-sales customer service seems about on a par with Arthur Daley's.
NB Looking at their web-site, guarantee periods now seem longer.

[/ QUOTE ] Except perhaps that they did publish an apology together with an assurance that things would improve on here.

Pleased to hear this. It had escaped my attention though. ( But I've still wasted £20 or so).

I was eyeing up these G4 replacements (these are the newest ones and said to be even brighter than their 6 LED predicessors) - actually 10v - 30v, and 150ma draw.

The others I had seen ( these ) are only regulated to 16v and still draw 120ma - 30ma's difference (and less light output).

Non regulated ones such as the ebay ones still draw 150ma.

Perhaps this is just applicable on G4 bulbs?

I haven't (yet) investigated nav LED's (a whole new debate!) but will be looking for an anchor and / or tricolour replacement bulb soon!

12V low energy bulbs such as these ?

[/ QUOTE ] First snag I can see is their size. On E27 bases!
