Any recommendations, please?

There's a bewildering range of prices on Amazon, from £3 to loadsa money.

I'm not going potholing, or anything too extreme, but want it for a kayaking and back to (very) basics camping holiday in Sweden.

I'd rather pay more than get some rubbish by Rolson, but don't want to spend silly money.

A range of output would be useful.

Thank you for your thoughts.

it has to be LED, not ordinary bulb.

I have had a Petzl Tikka Plus for over six months, and it has been used almost daily through the winter for lambing and snail-hunting.

Two white beams (hi and lo) plus white strobe; and red and red strobe.

3 AAA batteries, so easily sourced and replaced. I guess 90 hours use since new and no need to replace the batts yet. Seems to be waterproof, as it has been worn in Exmoor rain quite often without dissolving.

Comfortable elastic strap.

The On-Off switch can be operated with gloves on, but is a tiny bit fiddly; OK with bare hands.

Good main beam, and the low beam is more than OK to read by.

Thanks Sarabande.

That's about the price I had in mind.

Wow....'Snail hunting on Exmoor'......what a great product endorsement!

It gets good reviews on Amazon, too.

I have a Petzl e+Lite same spec as Sarabandes but smaller uses a Lithium ion battery havnt changed the battery for 20 months its really good, as a Locksmith i use it a lot

NealB,

I can't recommend the Silva Siju highly enough!

http://silva.se/products/outdoor/siju-black

Twin LED, ranges from Bl***y eyewateringly bright, to a dimmer more manageable bright, to flashing "rave on my forehead" alert-type mode.

Very light, very easy to carry around due to it's little mesh pocket that it folds up into (pocket is an integral part of the headband) it's ready when you need it and no bother to have with you when you don't.

Someone bought me one as a Secret Santa at work, couldn't do without it now!

Head Torch

Hi,

I have always sworn by my Petzl and still use it today although I have also purchsed a couple of products by a company called LED Lenser...... they are incredible.

The head torch has a variable beam and on full whack would put most hand held torches to shame.

Well worth a look, the product are very good quality. Price wise I think the head torch was around the £40 mark, may seem a little stron but a quality bit of kit.

Hope this helps.

I bought a fishing cap complete with LEDs in the peak (with switch) from Aldi's great, - beats those forehad attachments hollow; bought one or two for my mates.

Thanks for all the suggestions.....

On the one hand I can see the appeal of the beautifully engineered ruggedness of LED Lenser, and can imagine it giving many years of satisfying use..... but I also like the price of the Alpkit Gamma (recommended by 'Trail' magazine, no less).

Then again, the Petzl is a torch that's proven itself during wild snail hunting.... must be something worth considering, too.

Hmmm..........which is better?

In the words of the (brilliant) Harry Hill.... there's only one way to find out......(all together now).....

"FIGHT!!!"

Thanks again.

Hmm. £20 to £30 for a Petzl. £9 for three multipack Rolson = 3 headtorches and 6 mini LED torches and batteries included. White and red LED mode. Everyone on board has a headlamp and backup torch !!! Cheap and cheerful. Mine have lasted for two seasons so far and are still going strong.

Mind you I splashed out on an Energizer for myself at £9 but then I am the skipper.

For your application Zebralight are very hard to beat. They are very efficient up to 16 days continuous use from a single AA battery (on low)
They are smaller (not much bigger than a AA battery) than the common multi AAA battery head torches, and a single battery is easier, (and cheaper) to replace, especially in the dark. They are made of aluminium rather than plastic.

£3.99 for the Aldi cap!

I have a Unilite which I've been very pleased with.
http://www.uni-lite.com/led-headlights/ps-h2-micro-led-headlight/ is the one I have, it has several features I like:-
1. Only one battery, a single AA
2. Slim, not bulky, lightweight, doesn't stick out miles like the cheap ones
3. Adjustable angle, rubberised, bright light, comfortable.

They do a few others too which look OK.

Definitely worth putting in the mix for your consideration

Thanks for your thoughts..but I've had several bad experiences of rubbish tools by Rolson, and won't encourage them by giving them any more of my money.

I bought one of those and my family laughed at it, saying it was too cheap to be any good.
Then my daughter borrowed it in an emergency and granddaughters then used it. I can't get it back now, I suppose I'll have to go and buy myself some more "Cheap Rubbish"
[Aldi also had safety specs with LED attached, seriously un-cool, so safe from borrowing]
