Hi,

When browsing ebay I came across what looked like some nice LED Bayonet bulbs that would fit three light fittings on the boat. It was a bit of an impulse buy and I wasn't looking for bulbs at the time.

They arrived from China after a couple of weeks wait and cost pennies!

But they don't fit, as the bulbs only have a single contact on the base, yet my light fittings have two pins in the connector.

I don't really want to change the fittings. I guess the single contact on the bulb is more suited to cars.

I can't find anyone on eBay that shows pics of the contacts, just the bulbs themselves from the side or top.

I also ordered some festoons, and they are wonderful, so I somewhat succeeded :-).

Any suggestions for LED bayonet bulbs with two contacts on the base? Do these bulbs have a modern 'E' number?

Tony - I ordered some similarly cheap BA15S bulbs from China on EBay. They sent the wrong ones. Still waiting for the correct ones to arrive. I might be interested in yours - if you'd like to offload them can you point me at the listing so I can see if they're what I want?

You are welcome to have them.

And just realised the picture is very clear - just a bad purchase on my part.

Yes you can buy adaptors for 12v lamps - I've tried one but in my case the extra length of the adaptor made the bulb too high in the lamp.

What's the difference between 'level' and 'offset' pins? Read the description but don't get it?

On one type the bayonet pins are level, on the other they are offset :)

They are level if it doesn't matter which way round the bulb goes, offset if it does. So, for example, traditional 21/5W stop/tail lamps for cars have dual central contact offset pins to make sure the filaments are the right way round; 21W flasher bulbs have a single central contact and level pins; the lamps in my saloon fitting have dual central contacts but level pins because it doesn't matter which way the current goes through a filament and so on.

BA15S: Bayonet, 15mm diameter, single contact in base
BA15D: Bayonet, 15mm diameter, double contact in base

I've just replaced all my bulbs with LED ones from www.boatlamps.co.uk and they work beautifully.

Ordered from boatlamps - not as cheap as China - but feel better ordering from a UK company anyhow and knowing these are fit for purpose! Thanks for the link.

On a related subject here, I'd like to give a quick word of praise to a well known supplier of LED lamps...
I very recently ordered 3 LED nav light bulbs and 3 interior LED lamps, together with new lamp holders and due to very slow internet was unable to ascertain whether the bulbs had offset or parallel lugs. Anyway I ordered 6 parallel lug holders, but the supplier contacted me before dispatching the order to check that it was correct, and then amended it as required.
So, very good service from Searolf. By the way, the information about the lugs is on their website, the error was mine.
