Every so often you get bitten. I don't tend to moan about how much people charge. I was not one of the bunch to expect reduced mooring fees over corona Virus. However £40 for a small nut and Key. Norris charge less than £10. Actually they include a nut and Key with their props. so I was a little surprised to have 40 plus quid added for a nut, washer and Key on top of a fair price for a new shaft.:(:(

No. Still everyone needs to make money in these trying times don't hey. whats £40 plus vat!!. I must have mug stamped on me forehead.

I'm a bit confused.

Yonks ago I had a new shaft from Norris, complete with key and nut. Seemed good value at the time and although the nut was quite pricey, it was made specially to fit inside my folding prop.

Did you get your job done there or elsewhere?

Somewhere else. Norris are very reasonable. Their standard pricing includes a nut, washer and Key in the price. If you need to buy a further nut or Key, their prices are shown. again reasonable. I went somewhere else to make life easier. the prop was a bit dearer but that's life. 40 plus vat on top for nothing more than a SS M12 , washer and Key. It may be reasonable and im being bloody tightfisted. I am Tempted to ask if its a fair price but the end of the day its small change. or is it ?

Feeling as you do, I think that you have an obligation to mention it to the supplier. The supplier then has the opportunity to explain. There may or may not be justification. No point moaning on here but doing nothing about it.

Relax, you are a yachty, ever since Ted Heath announced it, the world knows we really enjoy getting screwed. sorry, ripped off. Volvo Penta have made a fortune selling cheap engines to boat builders then recovering the profit on the sale of parts. It has become so ingrained that some of us get upset if the price is close to normal, all part of the experience of being the owner of a luxury craft.

I think it is worth pushing back on this sort of thing. If they quote you a price for a bigger job, and then bite you on the bum for trivial extras, I think it's unacceptable.

I would definitely ask very politely - can you explain where this price X came from? The going rate appears to be Y!

Then if you're not happy with the answer, you can gently remonstrate (c'mon, I'm a good customer and this is the sort of misunderstanding we should try to avoid); gently threaten (surely that's not the sort of reputation you guys want); or outright challenge (I don't think that's defensible and I think you are up against trading standards).

Do you need these guys for future work?

I would suggest looking at the bigger picture. If the total price for the shaft, nut, key, delivery etc was reasonable then, overall, it was a fair deal and I can't really see the point in unpicking it.

Hey im chilled. Just airing me views. ill not lower myself ever to mention who it is over a stupid Nut and Key, but that's all it is,
Its an off the shelf Nut and \Key. overal the price now is 40% higher than Norris. Things you can do with a Nifty in your hand. Try selling a nut over the counter for 50 squid, youd only try once. easy to add it on an invoice though. Me, like most on hear would stew over it and pay it. I recon they made 10 times the money on the sale of that nut and key compared to the shaft cost. accidents do happen, so does , so does taking the mickey.
