Leatherman/Swissarmy things...

How about a Swiss army boat. One bits a cruiser, pull out another bit and its a fly bridge. A stick to pull out and make it a raggy. Fold the whole thing up and put it in your pocket and close down the whole marine industry at a stroke!!

Well I did til I went to majorca on the 22nd Feb and forgot it was in my hand luggage (it had been there for the previous trip in November). Had to put it in the tray that they collect scissors and nail files in, cause they would not let me take it on plane. Doh

Too late to put it in the hold luggage.

Got Swiss army knife now, not surprising that the Swiss dont go in for wars much, not much of a match for an Abrahms tank.

I'm involved in TV outside broadcasts - off to Iraq within the next 48 hours. All our riggers carry the Leatherman as a back up. They often find themselves a quarter of a mile from the 'van' , a hell of a walk just for a screwdriver. Nothing else comes close for quality or utility, certainly not a Gerber. Hope you like the pictures!!

I can vouch for that, a mate snapped a jaw off the needle nose pliers (tightening up some scaffolding!!??) and leatherman replaced it and gave him a nice leather pouch (it came with a nylon one)

Personally I like the Leatherman Crunch the locking jaws are great for clamping things while you work on them. I have various different ones which go with different activities but the crunch is the best so far

I thank you for those sentiments Forbsie. Its ironic, the only time i get a chance to look in at forums like these is when i'm on standby to go somewhere abit busier. I'm on the technical rather than the journo side and work primarily for 'foreign' networks. So I didn't know Terry personally altho he was something of star in the industry. A very sad loss, but doing the job he loved.
Hope to look in when I get back - and get in a bit of boating!

LM-Gerber-LM

First had the standard Leatherman. Unfortunately, when you press hard on the pliers, the metal cuts in your hand. So when it went swimming, I bought the Gerber.

Great tool, but less quality than the LM. I did like the locking mechanism, though.

Now I got me a LM Wave. Great stuff.

When you're working around dingies, they are very usefull tools. You don't have to carry a whole tool box to do the basic maintenance.

Leatherman Wave

Got a leatherman wave over in the states $90, great bit of kit had it years now, even got nice rounded handles so you don't hurt your hands by squeezing too tight on the pliars ;-D

No corkscrew tho!...and trying to pull the cork out with pilars is a no-go-er!

Recently bought a Victorinox (they make Swiss army knives, don't they?) Leatherman lookalike for about $30. It's got everything 'cept a corkscrew.

I have a Leatherman Wave, admittedly I didn't buy it but found it in brand new condition on a riverbank in Idaho. At the time, I was using a BuckLite but can say that the Leatherman Wave, surpasses anything else I've ever had. I also wear it on my belt and don't really find it a problem.

I have now got a Leatherman Wave.
It is beginning to pay for itself allready because, I found a £1 coin which had been glued (ARALDITE) to the pavement out side the marina office at Port Solent. Obviously loads of people had tried to get it off but failed, until I came and dug up the pavement with various tools on the Leatherman!!

I have the Swiss Army knife/Victrinox (sp?) credit card thing. It is credit card sized, 1.5mm thick, and converts into the usual knife, screwdriver, scissors, pliers, files, GPS and other stuff. Total rubbish imho. A real credit card is much more use.

Wrong! These screwdriver knife combo thingys are extremely useful as presents, for anyone you know who might need a lethal knife (but not as good as a stanley knife) or a special crosshead screwdriver with a 1-inch handle, or likes to have a go at rounding nuts and bolts as soon as possible instead of a proper spanner. Take care not to use them at all so they are in pristine condition at christmas time.

Yes and no. I have kept the box, and kept the gadget in pristine condition, so can give to actuary bro-in-law or suchlikes next christmas. Thing is, I spect others have done this before me, and I'm possibly the 6th owner already. It might well be that the actuary axshully bort it in the first place. Still, who cares - I know the Stephen King novel he gave me last year is the very same one I bort for sister-in-law in 1998, I marked it with UV ink to prove it!

oh very nice - you all give each other equipment to slash yourself or others to bits, or horror books.

Mind you, I did once work at a co where the long service awards were tiepins, envelope openers, sets of cutlery and so on - each gift being a handy item if you wanted to stab someone in the back...

I took the plunge and bought a Leatherman Wave from a US website, as recommended in a letter in Yachting Monthly. Always had a Swiss Army knife, but too much of a lump in the pocket to be carried when I needed it. The Leatherman sits in its leather pouch on the belt, out of the way.

The quality of the Wave is exceptional. You can open the 2 blades single handed, but watch out, they are extremely sharp! I took the point of view that I wanted quality as it should be a lifetime purchase. I did not want the risk that it would break on a long trip and I could not get another, or, even worse, led to other problems because I could not fix whatever it was in a storm at night, etc, etc.

Thoroughly glad I bought it. The Swiss Army knife is now seldom used, except for the cork screw!

You need to go and get the feel of the different types in a shop.

Tee hee. Bit like going paintballing after teams of investment bankers have finished their session. Their overalls are all covered in their own team's paint colour, and all on the back.

Anyway, no leatherman or swiss army or surgical scalpel can be as sharp as the cutlery on D2, imho?
