I remember once seeing a way to tie leather shoe-laces, so that they don't undo themselves every 15 minutes. Can anyone remember how? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The result of the original thread. Laces slip because the knot tied is the wrong way around. If you normally do left over right, then do right over left. can't remember which way around it's supposed to be, but basically, if your knots slip, reverse the way you usually tie it.
Ok. I'll play, I have just retied my deck shoes, the knots do not look any different, I can't say how I normally tie them, it did seem different going left over right to start, but maybe only cos I was thinking about it.
Pain in the bum, aren't they? Once you get them tied successfully you must not undo them, ever. Try tying them wet - rawhide stretches when it is wet, and then when it dries it locks the knot. Use a double bow - this advice I give with some reservation because I don't think they look as nice with a double bow as with a single bow. The most important advice I can give is: When you buy new deck shoes, take the laces from your old ones and replace the nasty new ones with them. It takes about 15 years to break in a good pair of laces but only half that to break in a pair of deck shoes. Slightly off subject - never, ever, wear deck shoes with socks. The ultimate in naff.

I have to confess: not only do I on occasion wear deckshoes with socks, but I have even done so while sailing from Portsmouth to the Cherbourg peninsula. Hara Kiri is the only option, right?
Hari Kiri in an honourable death. I'd suggest that the crime of wearing socks with deck shoes is not entitled to any sort of honour, and that a slow and agonising death is only just and right
never wear socks with deckies. Never heard so much total b"£$%x. That might be OK in the med or Caribbean, but in the UK you've got to be kidding! Except for two or three months a year.
I'm afraid BrendanS is right. One glimmer of hope: Find someone wearing sandles with black nylon socks, report them to the footwear police and you may get your sentence reduced for turning Queens evidence.

True.
I tie my laces with continual knots until there is nothing left of the strands. Those old enough to remember - it looks like a scooby doo. That stays in position until I throw them away. They stretch a little but rarely fall off.
As I dont wear wellies, I do occasionally wear ex WD white Navy wool seaboot socks, which look more disgusting each season as they soak up yet more wet leather dye. God knows where I will be able to get genuine ones when they finally give up the ghost.
