Leather dashboards

Is this another of my daft ideas? Provided that the dash is reasonably isolated from crashing waves, and covrered when away from the boat, leather seems a reasonbly good choice of matrial for a dashboard. Seems that these fake (or real) wood dashboards age horribly because they're horizontal, not vertical like a car. And grp gets bashed and can't be made new again. And paint is even worse.

decent leather can actually be used as a hardwearing floorcovering if you have the cash so there is no reason why 'decent' stuff can't be used on a dash that I am assuming (unless your bedroom antics are legendary) won't get walked on.

My venerable Birchwood has the lower console covered in two tone (light grey/dark grey) leatherette which looks as good today as it did when new. The upper helm position is faced with the same material in black and again, no problem. Laquered wood looks good when new but I have always thought it's longevity must be questionable.
For the same reason I prefer the old teak finishes rather than all that gloss.

Matt, leather is what you park your behind on when you get into your Jag and what you cloth your vitals in for a bit of Saturday Night Fever with the wife or whoever but a dashboard for your boat, I dont think so. I've seen leather upholstery damaged by seawater and it's not pretty; mind you it was pink leather so it probably deserved it

Were going down 1am Saturday morning hopfully get down there for 5.30 in the evening were going down in a Jaguar Lister which we hope won't overheat.But we will be down there all week droping in at Golfe Juan for 1 night.

There's no reason why you couldn't use some Alcantara/Novasuede sort of stuff. After all Windy use it for their cockpit seating which would be far more exposed than a dashboard.

By the way, what have you ordered?

Now, this jaguar lister. I wdn't imagine that it'll overheat, indeed it may not warm up if you take fifteen blimmin hours. Get some sleep beforehand, go at 11pm, and be there for breakfast.

It's a leopard sport 23. There's choices of finishes, and they seem keen on painting things, but I don't really want a painted dashboard, unless its beer-bottle proof.

If I got enough sea water on the leather at my lower helm to damage it, I suspect that it would be the least of my worries!
