Hey all- New to the forum currently based in Newport- At some stage I'm looking to buy a smaller yacht- 24ft perhaps. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend places to learn or even if its best to get expeirence by joining/helping someone else. Go easy!

Hello,
I would suggest you join the local sailing club, Newport Uskmouth Sailing Club, and get yourself some crewing experience before you think of buying.
A bit of experience crewing will certainly help when it comes to buying your first boat

Welcome to the BC
NUSC, Cardiff Bay YC and probably Cardiff YC run various courses which
will get you meeting yacht owners/crew.
I live in Bassaleg but am a member of CBYC 'cos (after 65 years) I have
become averse to slipping and sliding around in the muddy Usk.
Annual club fees/duties and fuel have to be taken into account, of course.
Have a look at the websites, especially the crew wanted sections.
There are members of all three clubs (and a few others nearby) in this parish.
See also the Bristol Channel Yachting Association website.

Thankyou both for your help I'll look into that straight away. I think i'll keep putting money aside for the timebeing and like you said - get aload of lessons and expeirence under my belt. :D

As said by others above but don't leave it too long, i have never seen so many boats being sold so cheap.Well financial climate and worst sailing year for ages.

Cardiff yacht club are running an RYA Dayskipper course in the near future. I suggest you look at the website and forum for details. There is a link in my signature.
If you go to the club on a Thursday night you will meet some of the cruisers.

We're not too far away from you at Chepstow and District YC - we can boast a stunningly beautiful rural location, and many members who will willingly take you out to show you the ropes.
