Learning to climb the mast

Re: Spoilsport! (nm)

Whichever halyard you use - I never use a shackle to attach to the bosun's chair. I have watched someone go up a mast using a snap shackle - tried not to think about what would happen if the pin lanyard had got caught in something... I think they had a safetly line as well - but can't remember exact details.

You might be able to get one of the sail makers to provide a rigger to demonstrate techniques.

One minor point: most of the riggers that I know will not go up a mast depending on a shackle to hold them. They prefer to tie the halyard on to the chair with a bowline.

(That's what happens when the thread reaches two pages; read the first, no mention of shackles, put in a post, then read the second page and find it already covered!)
Edited by peterb on 11/11/2004 22:55 (server time).

Once upon a time sailed on a boat wit a Japanese foredeck man, Keiji Yamaguchi. He could climb the mast by 'walking' up it horizontally, bracing himself with his hands on the shrouds. Good party trick.

He also introduced us to Black Nikka whisky which, I can confirm, works.
