Perhaps not. A speaker from the NSPCC, at one of our Round Table events, said that children who are cruely treated, often treat their children in the same manner.

Yes Ithikthats well documented …..luckily wasn’t cruelty treated just the odd whack which for some reason I recall

My little varmints had their share of chats with Mr Slipper, but only for deliberate breaches of well-understood rules. Talking to them years later, it wasn't the slipper they feared most, but Mum's look of disappointment at their behaviour.

I think Larkin had it right. Although most folk only read the first line or even the first verse.
