Leaking windows referb

I used butyl tape on the aluminium frame to grp on my countess. They where no leaks from the frame to grp when I removed them after 30 years and they looked to have been bedded on butyl originally so saw no reason to change. No leaks in the 2 years since I rebuilt my windows

There's always confusion between sealants and adhesives. If there is a mechanical way of retaining the glass, you don't need an adhesive which makes subsequent maintenance more difficult. Of course, you don't ever envision having to seal your windows again but time goes by and further maintenance becomes necessary.

I'm 70 so I don't think it will be my problem:encouragement:
That's rather a selfish attitude if I may say. I am also 70 this year and usually apply the '10 year test' to household and boatie projects but, with the sealant/adhesive choice, it costs nothing extra to use the appropriate product.

That's me told:eek:I was not aware butyl came in a tube as well as the roll I use for mounting deck fittings and the frames to hull:encouragement:

Just looked up the spec for Arbomast br butyl, looks like it's not suitable for UV exposure and there will be an exposed surface all round the edge.

Butyl in a tube is the way to go, but beware.
Use lots of masking tape. disposable gloves etc and old overalls as the stuff is really messy and might just be the stickiest stuff you'll ever use.
