Leaking trim cylinders on a VP DP-E drive..how fix

Brought the boat our of the water on Friday and found both trim cylinders on the port engine leaking hydraulic oil. Talked to a Volvo Penta reseller on Saturday and the only spare part that's available seems to be the whole cylinder.
Changing both cylinders is a lot of money and effort as it very hard to get to from the inside. Looking closely at the cylinders a mechanic should be able to dismantle them while still attached to the transom shield and replace whatever needs replacing!?

Anyone have any good advice how to fix it?

Yes, it can be done.

Remove pin and disconnect outer pivot.
Unscrew end of cylinder. Don't try to tap it round - it's soft and you will just damage it. I made up a C-spanner with two pins.
Withdraw piston.

You can then replace the piston O-ring and rod lip seal.
The seals are obtainable at any good O-ring stockist.
Make sure you buy lip seals with stainless springs.

just a quick tip,lift leg up/down to find out exactly where fluid is coming from.Poss loose hose connection or damaged hose rather than ram problem?
Also check fluid is not contaminated with sea water,it will b*****r up pumps as well.

Thx! Just the answer I was hoping for. The leak it pretty obvious (and have not yet contaminated the oil)so "thefatlady"'s advice is spot on!
 
When mine went not good news, cylinders couldnt be removed because locating pins obscured by transom. Ended up less labour to take both engines out to effect replacement /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
I beleive the later type rams can be (as weve got now). But these were originals (1989) which were not servicable. At least thats what i was told. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
I've put a mechanic on it, he seemed comfortable doing it. Said he would warm it up before unscrewing the top end as its also glued with locktite.
