The stern tube on my Macwester Wight leaks water and grease at the poing where it joins the hull. How is it fixed to the hull internally? How can i repair it?

Same on mine-
You may have a solid tube with a screwed on flanged stuffing (non-Freudian!) box, held with two screws.
(Mine is Stuart Turner apparently)
On mine, with the yanmar 1 pot jigging about, it has the same symptoms.
I'm going to sort the engine mounts and reseal with new screws.

If it is an ST tube (and other makes of the same era are similar) then it is a broze tube with housings screwed on either end. Normally the tube is a tight fit in the hull, bedded in sealer and the housings are screwed on against a bead of sealer. They are locked into place with two screws.
So if water is getting in past the tube you need to take both housings off and re-seal - probably replacing bearings at the same time. It could however, just be the stufffing box that is leaking, which you can remove and re-pack.

Hi All-
Magna doesn't leak from the aft flange, its water coming past the threads between the forward flange (stuffing box assy) and the tube.
The Macwester OA Tech guy warns against disturbing a rear flange as the two fixings in the hull can snap/get lost/fail inside the deadwood etc.
I've thought about introducing a rubber flex tube between the stern tube threaded section and a new matching stub of pipe screwed into the stuffing box, in effect allowing it to float and take the engine 'jigging loads' off those two screws.
It's a serious undertaking, using correct tube and designing out torque effects.. Am I first?

Check the OD of that housing to see if a Volvo seal will fit. All your problems will disappear.
