Dear Gang

I went to see the Mercury 2.5 outboard about which I was asking for price advice. It looks OK but ... it won't start. The reason is pretty obvious: with fuel tap on, choke open and throttle open, petrol widdles out of the exhaust. This does not look right.

Any suggestions about where to look first? Sticking needle valve in the carb? And has it really managed to fill the crankcase?

Yes stuck needle valve or float is a very likely

But does it have a fuel pump? Punctured diaphragm therein could give the same symptoms.

got a year or serial number ? Can look things up then .. but Mercs don't change much.

2 stroke ?

Edit:
No fuel pump I don't think

Exhaust is at the bottom of the block so any fuel flooding in will simply drain straight out

Rebadged Tohatsu? If so all the inf on Lakesailor's site http://www.lakelandimages.co.uk/Forum pics/info_engine/Tohatsu/

All sorted ...

At the seller's suggestion, I took the outboard to a local service place - the excellent Castle Douglas Small Engine Clinic. They report that the carb was completely gooped up with varnish after years of disuse. That has now been sorted and the outboard serviced for a modest costs which the seller and I are sharing.

Now all I need is a good source for the rubber grip on the tiller. Any bright ideas, anyone?

Any Mercury dealer. Should not be expensive only around $6 in the USA

Part number 95274 providing I'm looking at the right model.

Google should find you a dealer who will supply mailorder

Alternative: Rubber tube from Science department. Wont last long, esp if you get petrol on it but then you just replace it when necessary.

Garden hose ??

make a nice wooden one.
