the pump on my Yanmar 3GMF leaks, not hoses or seal but seems to be from the back, is this reparable or is it simply a case of biting the bullet and buying a new impeller pump?
They often have two lip seals back-to-back - one to keep the oil in the engine and one to keep the seawater in the pump. As has been said, there is usually a "weep hole" between the two so you can see which one is leaking. Any bearing factor should be able to sell you some replacement seals if you can get the old ones out so that you can give them a pattern. The only thing to be careful of is to make sure you get ones with stainless or bronze springs in them just behind the lip. Obviously carbon steel springs are a standard fitment and will be OK on the engine side (if its that kind of pump) but won't last 5 minutes on the salt water side. Also check the shaft when you get it apart. IF it is worn to a groove where the seal runs, it needs replacing too.
The pump on the 3GM30F is belt driven so comments above about weep hole and oil seals do not apply. You say the seal is not leaking and the leak is from the rear of the pump. That means the leak is from the plate that removes for impellor change. May just need tightening or a new seal. Speedseal?
The pump is held onto the engine by 3 bolts IIRC. Depending on your access, it may well be easier to take the pump off the engine to effect the repair. A fairly simple DIY job. From your description it doesn't sound like you need a new pump.
Sorry if this is obvious but assuming you have the original faceplate on the pump and not a Speedseal, there is a paper gasket between the pump body and the faceplate. This may have failed. It should also always be replaced with a new one if the impeller is changed. They only cost about £2 so its no great expense.
As tugboat says, its best to take the pump off rather than try and check this in situ.

Itss not leaking fron the rear, and I replaced the rubber O ring (not a paper seal) at the princely price of c£8 .. robbing bustards!

Your initial post states the leak seems to be from the back, now you say it's not leaking from the rear.
Back = rear where I come from. I'm confused, can you be a bit clearer exactly what the problem is?
