Hi,
I have a Sun Odyssey 29.2 (2004) and I've noticed that when the hatches are locked down they are watertight but when they are open I am getting water coming through the handles. Can anybody suggest a remedy ?

Thanks

Railbob

That's the thing I think the "O" rings are gubbed but I don't know the make of hatch to replace them with. Any ideas as to make ?

O Rings being such a common component can be bought off the shelf at many places e.g. http://www.orings-seals.co.uk I would recommend that you carefully examine the hatch to determine how to dismantle the lever. You may find that a simple clean or adjustment is all thats required as crud can stop O rings from sealing.

Replace the two little O-rings inside the locking mechanism. (Assuming they're Goiot or Lewmar hatches)

Thanks to everyone so far, Spyro I'm heading down to the boat tomorrow so I'll have a look and see if I can tighten any screws.

I'm puzzled. If the hatch is watertight when closed, surely everything is fine? If it's open, then plenty of water will be coming in through the girt big 'ole, so a trickle around the handles hardly matters.

Pete

The hatch is likely to be a Goiot make. The handles are fairly straightforward to dismantle. From the underneath, use a small, sharp screwdriver to lever off the cover on each handle. These are kind of banjo shaped and are obvious when you look at the hatch. Once the covers are off, you will see a cross head screw which holds the inside and outside components together. If you undo these, you can dismantle the catches, and inspect the O rings and the rest of the mechanism. I would try cleaning everything up, and then lightly grease the o rings with some vaseline. Reassemble, tightening the cross head screws sufficiently to seal the handles without the catches being too tight to turn. Check that they are watertight before putting the covers back in place. I used to do this job every couple of years on my SO32.

Pete, it ain't a trickle unfortunately.

I had a look at the hatch today and I've found it's a Gebo Flushline. Does anyone know how to fix these handles. I couldn't see any screws or such on them when I took off the cover, are the screws possibly behind the Blue locks ?

Thanks for your help so far.

Ahem, slightly faulty memory on my part. Is your handle like the bottom one in the picture below? If yes, then the bit which comes off to reveal the screw is the piece to the right of the blue locking slide. It levers off, using the hole you can see to get it started. The blue locking plate will then slide off and you will be able to get at the screw.

+1

:)

(Personally, I would be worried if they did not let stuff in (air and the like when opened))
