leaking gm 10 waterpump

I am sure some one here will have had this problem
my water pump is leaking, on inspection using a
mirror it is leaking from the pump body
in other searches I have discovered this leak is
probably the water seal on the shaft
main question is can this be repaired or am I
at the hands of yanmar extortionists an need to buy a complete
pump

When I owned one of these, the shaft in the pump needed replacing. It was about 70 pounds - probably rather more now.

Usually a simple repair which you can do yourself. If the shaft has become grooved by the seal, it may need replacing. Otherwise, it's just a question of fitting new seals. There's an exploded diagram and full details in the GM workshop manual, which you can download free from http://www.motoren.ath.cx/menus/yanmar.php

Check the oil pipes beneath the water pump for corrosion.

A model engineer or local machine shop could make a new shaft if they have cylindrical grinder.

I had this problem last season. The water lip seal on the shaft can wear the shaft leading to a leak. I removed the pump and disassembled the seals and bearings, and polished the shaft to remove the ridge [using fine wet and dry, with the shaft in the chuck of a drill press]. Reassembly with new seals solved the problem.

If the ridge can't be polished out, then a new shaft is needed, either from a Yanmar spares supplier or a friendly machine shop.

Might be possible to save a scored shaft with something like this?

Gives a new seal surface without machining. PBO showed saving a saildrive leg using them.

Make sure the seals are ones with stainless steel springs (Yanmar ones definitely are), some seals have springs which go rusty.
