Leak at back of Raw water impeller housing?

Tex. Did my 2030c a couple of weeks ago. It really is very easy. I took the opportunity to us a viton two lip seal with a stainless steel Spring. https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/141872427553
It was £8 instead of £3 for a single seal & mild steel Spring. The seal is fitted so the Spring on the seal is in contact with the water so I a stainless Spring has got to be a better option.
Fitting it involved femiving pump cover, removing impeller, seeing totally knackered seal and hooking it out. I then did gentle clean up of area, little bit of lube on the shaft, put some insulating tape over the end of the shaft just to protect the lips of the new seal as I pressed it onto the shaft. Pressed the seal into the recess so that it was flush. Re inserted impeller, cover on, run engine, no leaks.

Many thanks, I have ordered seal you suggest and will give it a go.
Was it difficult to get old seal out?

The old seal was easy to remove. It was already falling to bits. The Spring had disintegrated and there was plenty to get hold of with a pair of long nose pliers.
Make sure you shut the seacock before you start work.

Hi,
Thanks to all the posters, this thread has some very useful information. The impeller on my VP MD17D started leaking exactly like the OPs, so I need to replace the water seal. I'm hoping to do it from the cover side without removing the whole pump, but just in case I do, can anyone advise:

1. if i do have to remove the entire impeller body, given that the inner of the two seals is an "oil seal", is there a risk that oil will come pouring out as i take it off?

2. can anyone direct me to a good source of seals, gaskets, impellers etc? I'm based in the UK or Greece

many thanks

I not done one on a MD17D but I have replace them on other Volvo engine , never had a poblem with oil , and I get my seals from simply bearing .
Some pump you need to push the second bearing out with a press or at less a vise

It depends on exactly what pump is fitted . It may not be even possible to replace the seal without removing the pump ( Oil wont pour out but have rag handy to mop up any drips etc)

Take a look at the workshop manual although its not very helpful for these simple tasks. Pages 21/22 at https://www.maritimepropulsion.com/files/pdf/1001252

See also the parts daigrams at Marine parts http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-cat-7742230.aspx

or Volspec https://www.volvopentashop.com/Vols...6?path=MarineDieselEngines/7742230/7742230_26

If you buy seals from a bearing stockist be sure to get ones with stainless steel springs

Note which way round the seals are fitted.

Be prepared to find you need to do a more extensive pump overhaul. No a bad idea anyway while its off the engine Then you can refit and forget ( apart from impellers) for a few years.

Well worth changing the bearings at the same time. The seal on the pump on my Yanmar leaked and was replaced. Three months later we left the boat afloat for a week and on our return the bearings had corroded solid.

Thank you both, I'll have a go tomorrow and report back. From what I can see taking photos into the impeller side it looks like the seal has separated in the middle with the inner part still tight on the shaft and the outer against the body.

I'm hoping to find the oil seal intact so I can get accurate dimensions for the new seals. I assume the different variations of pump/impeller housing all use the same size seals? Do either of you happen to recall the dimensions of the seals?

My best estimate at this stage is that I have this pump:
https://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7742230-26-15112.aspx

The impeller is marked as VP part 3593658 which i believe was replaced by (kit) 22222936

Hi Zippy, I had the same problem earlier this year on my 2010. The water seal is easy to change. If you change the oil seal at the same time you need to remove the water pump. This is not particularly easy as there is one bolt on the pump which is screwed in from the back of the pump. To get to this bolt I had to chock up the engine and remove the LH engine mounting. You can’t get a socket wrench on the bolt head either, I used a ratchet spanner.
If you change the pump shaft, beware as there are two sizes of shaft. The Volvo part I ordered at first did not fit my pump. With the pump reference number ( on the front cover) I was able to order the correct shaft kit from Jabscoshop online.
If you change the shaft it has a circlip which is easily damaged, luckily it seems to be a common size.
Best of luck with your repair.

When you go to put that stud back cut a slot in the end with a hacksaw.( not the nut end the end that fits in the pump housing) Then with a thin screw driver you can insert it through the hole the stud is going through from the front & wind the stud towards you until it gets stiff. Then you only have to give a couple of turns on the spanner. The spanner bit being awkward as you can only move it a bit at a time & takes ages. But the screwdriver trick helps a lot.

Always change both seals & the bearings at the same time as you will only have to go back on the job after a while. Dodgy bearings will ruin the seals & dodgy seals will have started the bearings on their way out.
