Lead pipe?

Can anyone help answer this for me? Witch still had the original cockpit drain pipes. Made of lead pipe, they are fixed to the planking just below the water line inside and out using brass nails. If the photo attachment worked you can see the skin fitting on the left of the photo (inside part only, the outside section was cut off to remove the pipe). The shorter arm connects to the cockpit and the longer arm led to a hole about one inch diameter in the deck just outside the cockpit coaming. I guess the longer arm acts as a vent, but is that right, and why was it necessary?
