Layout software (not Visio for preference)

I have a couple of (magenta) copies of Visio 2013, but wondered - seeing the neat diagrams of electrical circuits that are posted here) - if there's a simple, uncomplicated program that can be used to work out some layouts of batteries, switches, radio, solar etc.

MS Word drawing add in
Image editor such as (open source) Paint.net (not to be confused with MS Paint)
Various CAD products.
