Laying up in Sicily

Our 32' Beneteau is moored in South of France and we plan on cruising Corsica and Italian coast this summer to end up in Sicily for the winter before returning in 2013. Does anyone have any experience/info on locations/prices for laying up in Sicily (mooring or hard-standing) for 6-8 months?

Hi Frank. Sorry to see that no one has replied to you yet!

We have over-wintered in Marina di Ragusa and it has been great. Do a search on the internet for porto turistico marina di ragusa.

Alternatively, I visited the new marina in Licata, Sicily yesterday. Their website is www.marinadicaladelsole.it. They are offering 20% off the prices quoted on their site and there isn't that much difference, I don't think, between the two in terms of pricing.

However, Licata is not yet finished and, from what I saw yesterday, the few boats that have over-wintered there all had about 20cm of growth on the hull due to the local river pouring rich nutrients into the water.

There's also a link on that page to a German site, which gives a lot more detail about the various ports of Sicily (in English), though it's not up to date on Licata and Ragusa. These last two, being new and building new business, will probably both be offering healthy discounts again next winter.

Licata town probably has the edge on Ragusa for live-aboards, since there's more life in it over winter. But the marina is still incomplete, so there will be a little more risk of teething troubles.
 
Marina di Ragusa

We are thinking of booking in to that marina. Look’s nice and a good price. Also around where we would like to start next year.
Can you tell us did you have much growth? How long were you there, and how safe is it if the yacht left there unattended for 5 to 6 months i.e. the weather/security?

Cefalu on the North Coast has a marina (2008) and very helpful staff who will give you a lift into the lovely town.
 
Marinas in Italy

We are also trying to decide between Ragusa and Licata marinas to winter over in Sicily. Licata sounds quite nice and is right by a real town, but the marina is not finished yet. If anyone has seen the Licata marina recently and can comment on the status, appearance, etc., that will be much appreciated!

Ragusa vs Licata

Hi there,

I am also trying to decide between Ragusa and Licata for the coming winter. Licata sounds good at least in theory. It seems to be right by a larger city, whereas Ragusa the city is quite far away from the marina. Is that correct? Also can you comment on the state of completeness of Licata marina - are the grounds and facility etc. in good shape?

Marinas Sicily

Ww are also wanting to layup in Sicily, and waiting on responses from Ragusa and locate, but does anyone know if they have " out of the water, I.e up on the hard" facilities, for 14 meter catamaran.

we spend last winter in Ragusa , we had a great time the marina staff couldn do enough for us , the small town is open all the year round , the three supermaket and busses to Ragusa they will be plenty of liveabourd there this winter so if your leaving your yacht and going home I am sure if you ask around someone will keep an eye on it for you .

lifting is expense and there workmanship isnt that great , but as a marina I can't fault it

Raguse is a great marina but please check with the marina with out sider doing work there , as last year their wasnt very keen on outsider doing work , you could do work your self as long as you could reach by standing on the ground , antifouling must be done by the yard .
