Dear team
I purchased a new Lavac Zenith toilet lid from Spares Marine last September, the old lid being 30 years old and had cracked under where the seal fitted so was not sealing properly.
We fitted the new lid on returning to the boat in Grenada in November and everything was fine for a few weeks then the new lid started cracking from the centre where the casting sprue was. The new lid has always flexed under vacuum, whereas the old lid was much more solid.
As a result the new lid now doesn't seal properly. Spares Marine are not interested and Lavac (Sea-sure) claim that the lid has been knelt on while under vacuum (not so).
The new lid is definitely of inferior quality to the old one and interestingly Spares marine charge £100 while Sea-sure charge £180 for the same unit. Could one be a non-genuine spare?
Has anyone else had similar experiences?
Not sure how to upload photo's but if anyone can assist I have photo's to share.20160224_082549.jpg20160224_082555.jpg20160224_082545.jpg20160224_082534.jpg

Can't help with the quality issue, but that lid doesn't look like a genuine Zenith item. AFAIK it should have a small lifting tab at the front.
The Popular model doesn't have that feature.
Edit. Re VicS, I got picture 90 deg. out. Agree the tab is not in view

I think newer lids are flexible or rather its only very old ones that are not.

The owner of the boat I sailed fitted a new lid , which is flexible quite a while back.

We did not manage to split the new lid. Its main problem was that it was a sloppy fit on the very very old hinges . A crew member broke the old one by falling on it.

IIRC the Zenith and Popular lids are slightly different diameters so not interchangeable

I cannot see the front in any of the pictures so cannot tell if it has a lifting tab or not!

None of its genuine now Its all Chinese made !

I have an old cracked one now not sealing, is there any merit/ prospects of success in trying to repair the crack with epoxy/ similar or should I just bite the bullet on a new lid?

Cheers

I would have a go with a hot glue gun as the adhesive is normally flexible. This would have to be done on the outside so that the vacuum is pulling the glue in. Another option could a bit of plastic chopping board, circular with chamfered edges and stuck in place on top with some silicone adhesive.
Never done this, but I would consider it if the lid of my lavac popular 'broke'.

Maybe with an old lid made of a hard plastic but probably not with a newer one made of a soft flexible plastic .

Perhaps a circle of Fablon or similar sticky-back-plastic would make a neter repair if it can cover the cracked area.

Perhaps people could take a look at the last post date before weighing in? This is a dead thread.

Make a sticker to cover the damage with the instructions pump 6 times ;)
