A fellow cruiser heard a 'loud' comment from a passerby yesterday saying ' it's against the law to hang washing on a boat in Spain'.
It was a lovely day and most of the liveaboards boats looked like Widow Twanky's on wash day:D
Got me to thinking, I know some UK marinas don't ' encourage' it but is it actually against the law anywhere?

Never heard anything like that in any marina in Spain, including spanish cruisers hanging washing out, I know what I would have said to the passer by!! How could the "law", distinguish between towels airing and washing?

The inly time I can remember anything like this was in the marina just outside Porto - Ouizerra? - where the office told us it was forbidden to hang washing up. In temperatures in the mid 30s we were reduced to using a tumble dryer!

As an aside, in many of the German lander it is forbidden by law to hang out washing (except for baby clothing) or to wash cars on a Sunday...... So no on does.

Couldnt hang anything out here in Corfu, its been rainingf for four days, with associated thunder and lightning!! When does it stop raining?? May??

It is against the law to do so in Tonga on Sundays. That's the only place I know of.

Of course, many marinas forbid it, though are usually tolerant of oilies, swimwear and towels. Its sheets and underwear that seem to cause offence.

Apparently its now not allowed to hang washing out in Spain,at least in cities. My FiL has to have some special thingy to hide the washing......I doubt there is a police force who are going to implement any regs....but inSpain as they say is different.....183 days err

Which is one of the ongoing roots of the unease between the Brits and the rest of the Europeans.

For them anything that isn't allowed is forbidden (verboten, interdit...), for those of us who have a Common Law structure if it ain't forbidden it's allowed.

That German rumour ends here please! Am from there and never heard of it.

Not forbidden in my (state run) marina here in Andalucia either.. Maybe in some of the posher private clubs.

It is however forbidden in many US burbs for fear of looking too poor for a dryer, there's even some "hanging out laundry comeback movement" now, can't find the article right now.

Pontrieux.

It poured with rain 10 minutes after this shot

They have a vaiety of wierd laws of this kind. It's also illegal (or, at least, used to be) to wash your car in the street. Apparently the actual offence was to allow washing water to fall from the car onto the road.

But you can still let dogs s**t in the street without cleaning it up!

Correct, but this is usually only in cities, to prevent everybody from hanging their stuff all around the place (which is not a particularly beautiful sight to be honest).

I don't think this would apply to a marina.

Definitely let it all hang out!

We found, when cruising South/Central America that the hanging 'smalls' (or in our case not so smalls) in the cockpit definitely shortened any visits from customs/armed naval patrols/similar officials....

It's hard for them to be officious with a line of assorted 'big womens knickers' hanging between you and them!

Great idea.

Who is it in one of the sailing magazines that recommends hanging out nappies on the guard rails to deter would-be rafter-uppers?

Let it all hang out

I notice the washerwoman has hung a towel over the ensign - no doubt in breach of some rule of flag etiquette.

She really will have to go - she hasn't a clue how to starch collars properly either. :D
