Laundering Sails

Anybody got any recommendations for sail laundering in the East Solent (say Hamble-Portsmouth) area? The sail-makers will take them in, but contract out the laundering, so who does it and at what price? We can repair our own sails, but haven't the space to do a good wash. If it has to be through a sailmaker, then any steers as to the best value would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Only do wholesale for sailmakers and pointed me back to Arun or such like.

Arun just quoted me (Wash Only, no repair) £3.10 per kilo.

For my 33', two year old Bav, he estimates £50 per sail.

I'm still a bit confused here , is the only reason for using a laundry service for sails because of lack of room or size of washer ?
Can they be washed in a laundrette using the big machine and then hung out to dry , or are the sails treated in some way ?

I used a local sailmaker for laundry + checkover/repair + winter storage (useful because the sails are bulky, even when folded). They subcontracted the washing to a company on the South Coast that did a collection & delivery to sailamkers.

The sails came back sparkling clean. They also smelled slightly of bleach, so some additional cleaning treatment is used.

Since the local chap retired, I am using Dolphin Sails now, who have their own industrial washing machine.

Bet they never got dirty in our clean air up here north of the border.........that will teach you to sail in the polluted air of the South coast!!! I guess the pollution of Fawley has to be cleaned by something.

Total loss arises from washing/washing agents that weaken or remove the resin that alone gives the sail shape and drawing efficiency.

Visible stains can be removed gently by hand, oxalyic acid agents and the like.

Yes, they use Tip Top (Ive just asked them). Intersetingly, I have received quotes of £3/kg - £4.33/kg - and they ALL use Tip Top!

Why don't several of you get together to form a mini co-operative and get all your sails done at Tip Top in bulk on a "no profit" basis ?
