We’ve got a Hydrovane wind vane self steering gear on the back end as well. I’m just hoping it works as well as most people say they do.

as you may recall, we fitted an HV last season.

I can happily tell you that Harry-the-Vane is every bit as good as others say. It has literally transformed our sailing (together with its non-identical twin brother Ray, the ram drive down below - at last a mechanic autohelm which actually works).

It's an amazing bit of kit. Even if second hand.

Seems not - all the ones I have come across have always been male.
One boat had Otto for the Autohelm, and Wilhelm for the Aries vane; another had Gustav for the wind vane, and quite a few wind vanes seem to be called George for some reason.
One would have thought a lonely singlehanded sailor calling it Anne the auto or Agather Aries?
