We had diesel delivered. Crew girl was on board. A few litres ( estimated by both the crew and the driver was 3l) went in the water on blow back. The Cannes Port authority treated it like an Anthrax threat. Euro 350 fine. Their water is filthy anyway !
I blamed the driver, they blamed me! Port of Cannes then went down a line of " gosh , no captain on board ... thats not allowed " so i paid and left before it all got out of hand.
The issue is ...
1. on a tanker the valve DOES NOT auto shut off
2. the delivery is fast ( you choose how fast of course) and tanks will eventually blow back. Judging this speed is trial and spillage!
3. you can't just leave the filler - you must be next to it to deal with blowback etc.
It would be nice if for "normal " boats they could deliver via a "normal" filling station attachment as there would be less issues.
I now cover the area in spill cloths and do it slowly.
The flip side of course is you save 20c per litre ( which just about equated to the fine!)
Joy!
