Hi All,

Could anyone tell me the name in English of the spar that supports the luff of a lateen rig sail?

Is it a 'yard', or summat else?

Bif, it´s a yard. There was a YM `test´ on one of the other Portuguese caravels were the `yard commanded great respect and when down was 6mt beyond the transom´ I was passing Viano de Castello back in 1979? when I saw them building the first modern replica. Forget the name, but think I might still have a photo in the loft.

It has also been referred to as a "luffspar". I would check what Villiers calls it in "The Sindbad Voyage" (?) when he was on an Arab boat that had a lateen rig.

really! a YM Test! any more info on when? I'd must to read it.

There is a sister ship to 'Vera Cruz' called 'Boa Esperança', but I am pretty sure these two were built at Vila do Conde and only after 1990.

I might have got it wrong, but certainly not later than ´85. It was in a shipyard on the south bank just to the west of the bridge. I went back and had a nose round.Still can´t remember the name but it wasn´t either of the ones you mention. The `test´was when one of the YM mob went for a ride on the Boa Esperanca out of (possibly) Portimao. Again can´t remember the date but around ´98-2000.
You might want to look at the replicas of Columbo´s ships by Huelva, bit of a haul, but worth it. First thought was how many people on such small boats. H&S wouldnt have stood for it!

Found it! May 85. The photo shows a high foc´sle, not typical of the caravela. I will try and get it up here. It is rather poor quality. taken with a 110 cheapy camera.
