I am thinking of organising a late season charter for myself and 6 or 7 friends in Late September/Early October

- Any experiences good or bad of late season charters

- Where would you recommend? Thinking Greece or Turkey at the moment - something 43'

Had a wonderful week end of October in Gocek area of Turkey a few years ago. Weather was mild rather than hot, water swimmable, bays were totally deserted and the restaurants often opened up only for us. Magical, but perhaps more towards the romantic end of the spectrum than you will be seeking with 6 or 7 friends!

I actually sailed around that area a few years ago (1997) on a late season flotilla we were very lucky with the weather as it was raining all the previous week and when we arrived

Met up with a couple on that trip that I have been racing on their contessa 32 then X332 ever since

It's still great in Turkey at that time of year, but the weather tnds to get less settled- you'll still get lovely warm blue sky days, but expect a bit of rain and cloud, possibly some strong winds. The bad weather never seems to last long. the sea is beautifully warm and ther are less people and boats. Some of the restaurants may be closing in October. The other thing is the days are shorter and it's geting dark by about 1830 Local. I have always been to Turkey early or late season and found it great.

You might want to check out Italian waters as well. For good wind conditions try northern Sardinia. The Maddalena archipelago is beautiful and in September the maxi yachts regattas and swan cups are hosted in the area (Porto Cervo)

That’s a coincidence – ’97 was when we were there. It was the last week of the season; we were on a Club/Flotilla with Sunsail and the Club brochure didn’t mention that the Flotilla part was actually a delivery back to Marmaris. On the second morning we were woken early and told we had to get out of Coldwater Bay smartish as there was a big swell. Sailed across the bay in what for us at the time was a biggish (3-4m according to lead boat skipper – seemed mountainous to us!) swell rolling in from somewhere down N. Africa way, which 5 year old daughter, and for that matter matter we, on only our second Flotilla, didn’t like much. So that evening at the meal we ‘mutinied’ and refused to do the delivery, which involved quite long sails along an exposed stretch of coast. Have to say Sunsail could not have been better about it (that of course was in the days when they were still independent) and we stayed bareboat around Gocek for the rest of the week. Sunsail have priced us out now and we have bought a boatshare in Croatia. Wouldn’t mind at all moving it down Gocek way some time in the future if all partners are willing - Gocek itself as you know is a bit chi chi (Turkish Fiskardho), but we’re suckers for that sort of thing – keeps the MABs at bay too. (Ducks!)

Definately agree about Sunsail getting expensive. Tried Topyacht last year and that worked out a lot more reasonable. SUnsail just seem to have lost it since being taken in by First Choice- the last holiday we did was last year- we did a club holiday due to pregnancy- it felt a totally different atmosphere and was not that enjoyable. The other problem is being lumped on all the flights full of " normal " British holidaymakers- you know the ones who feel the need to drink a few pints of lager at 4am!! Topyacht boats really were Top Yachts- very well equipped and well cared for.

You might want to check northern Sardinia. beautiful place and the Bonifacio strait provides good wind conditions. September generally is a good period to sail in the area (which in August is jammed with boats of all kinds...a nightmare). Some cool regattas in september also (maxi yachts in Porto Cervo).

Just back from my first Sunsail holiday - I say first, I could just as easily say last

Not impressed - bareboat or smaller companies the way to go I think
