That rod looks at 30lb test and the Penn reel looks like it could handle a large shark of a 50lb CQR anchor.

Did the critters stand a chance?

Nice fish by the way - well done.

Peter.

I think my humour was lost in translation.... I was referring to rubbery things that (I'm told) sometimes buzz.

But looking at the pic, I think these are called 'shads' maybe?

In my copy of Rick Steins fish cookbook (sad I know it) he does liken the USA striped bass and the mullet and they do look like mullet but rather bigger than our native ones!

I assume you caught these off the Chesapeake somewhere, is it far out or close to Coan River?

/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifWe were based in Coan River at the time, but actually were fishing just south of the Patuxent River entrance, but well over to the east side near Hooper Island light.

We'd been sanding down prior to repainting The Goose, so thought we'd accept the offer to go out for a couple of hours on a friend's boat when he'd finished work for the day. It was the day the last bit of blue paint was removed /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Left Coan River bout 3 back by 6.30 We were only fishing for about an hour and a half.

Specially in temps of 80+ degrees F and high humidity. Needless to say what cooking we did was on the marina BBQ.

Still it was all worth it when the end result was this.
They worked cheap too. Their first 'commision' on leaving art college. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
