Last ever MBM - What did we all think?

Well I bought the last issue the other day.

What a shame. The new layout, used features etc are great, and I think the magazine may well have done really well if given a chance - I would certainly have subscribed.

Also somewhat ironic to see in the letters page praise for the new layout and people mentioning taking out a subscription!

I don't know if starting a petition on here might get them to change their mind about canning it - but I suspect the decision is irreversable.

I also had a flick through MBY - but it's of almost no interest to me - Whilst having a slight "dream" factor, there is no chance that I'll ever be able to afford anything like that - whereas there may be a chance one day of owning some of the boats in MBM.

Sad, but unless MBY alters significantly then I don't have a boating magazine that appeals.

Perhaps someone could launch "Cuddy and Trailable cruiser monthly" - I'd subscribe to that bad boy, but I fear I will be a long time waiting.....
 
Spoke with MBM staff, some of whom frequent here, at SIBS and got what was presumably the well rehearsed IPC party line. No contrition. I could not be bothered to pay the £2 asked for the last issue at the stand.

Thankfully Neale & Claire's 'Motorboat Owner' has really hit the spot, and so far so good I wouldn't mind paying a subscription for it.

On a plus point perhaps PBO will become a little more practical boat owner in general balanced, rather than its strong emphasis presently on sailboats.

I'm curious. What are you calling 'the IPC party line' and what sort of 'contrition' did you expect?

To answer your question, I agree, I thought it was another very solid issue. As many have said, a thorough return to form.

IPC Party line that its OK to dis-continue what has been a very good and lately excellent magazine, as their other publications will cope with the demand dumped - very well rehearsed spin doctored briefing in my view.

The contrition expected was at least some level of sadness at the end of this magazine - there was none.

Separately I would clarify that my understanding of PBO is Practical Boat Owner - the word 'Sail' does not prefix 'Boat'.
 
Has anyone else got the latest (October) issue via Zinio on a tablet? I got it by post, but I normally get it to my tablet too, this one doesn't seem to have appeared...

Is there any chance that IPC (or whatever) might listen to, or even respond to, this point?
 
Looked at the circulation of mby and mbm when they said they were closing mbm. MBY has about a 2000 greater abc figure than mbm. Neither are particularly outstanding, but then I guess it is a very niche market.

It makes sense to close one and amalgamate them both into one mag with a little of each incorporated.

Least I hope this is the plan. I have 10 issues outstanding on my sub and 100ft yachts do not enter my horizon. Even If I won the euro lottery I only plan a 60 foot Nordhavn. Having boats with several crew and a skipper seems a little pointless and takes away the adventure.

Tinkicker, the issue is not so much circulation, as advertising revenues, which are much more than the subs revenues. I guess that IBC take more in ad revs from MBY than MBM.
