Its just bloody typical. I get my first diesel engined yacht and as from tomorrow, EU legislation says it will be illegal to offer reduced rate tax on diesel for leisure craft. I don't care if its red or white diesel, but having just read all about it on the RYA web site, I am amazed at the European Commission rejecting the UK's argument (which to me made plain common sense) to keep the reduced rate level.

It's not going to be illegal for ages. Government have a period of grace to decide how they are going to implement it, bring in necessary legislation etc etc. It'll be months if not years before anything happens

Did you actually believe that EU officials care what effect they have on the UK and its citizens?
The EU does not exist for our benefit.

As both main parties espoused their support for the retention of the lower rate of tax it should never happen.

Or will it be more like Labour and student fees?

Its in our manifesto.

There will be no increase.

We have legislated against any increase.

- Until 18 months after they're elected -
they bring in the legislation and increase the fees.

When its finally introduced (months / years?) I fill my boat with red which could stay in my tank for years if I don`t use it much so how on earth can it be policed?
(and I have diesel heating which will still run on red)

If you are challenged by C&E (some chance) how will they possibly know when you filled up last or how often you use the boat.

I bet I`m still running on red in ten years time!

You're right Brendan. We do have time before the law can be enforced, this c & p from the RYA website:-

"At this stage it is clear that the price will not go up on 1 January 2007. The reality is there will be a period of time in which boaters will continue to benefit from the low duty rate, and the earliest this can change is Summer 2007.

Changes can only be bought about through primary legislation i.e. the Finance Bill and it is highly unlikely that they will be in a position to do this in the next Finance Bill, which is due April 07".

I guess no one will run out of diesel this coming season

I live in Scotland part of the United Kingdom and have never been a supporter of the Scottish Nationalist Party nor have I ever voted for them.

What Alex Salmond says although he may be a great orator are his politics not mine and while his arguement about North Sea Gas and Oil would hold water if Scotland had total independance it is merely words while it doesn't.

Having duel nationality Norwegian and British gives me a times a closer insight into the question of Europe I would do as Norway did and reject membership.

Is this right? What are we all supposed to do, install a second tank?

I know I am going to be flamed for expressing this view.
Look at countries like France, Holland and Germany. Their governments exist for the benefit of the ordinary people unlike this country which has tight control by the non-working class establishment. Just look at the stats: 90% of land in the UK is owned by 10% of the population; parliament controlled by Farmers and Lawyers; Consultants in hospitals earning 300,000 a year( I know because my partner is a tax inspector!) wonderful if you can afford to go private; the press in the hands of a few barons who hate the EU because they want their noxious newspapers and TV channels to dominate the almost illiterate British population.
A few extra quid on a tankful of diesel is neither here nor there - open your eyes and see what has really happened to this country.
Asbestos suit and codpiece now adjusted!

Not sure about the farmers bit and I'd suggest that the country is run by a bunch of self perpetuating civil "servants" (ha ha) that regularly make monumental cock-ups when attempting to put into action the illjudged decisions of the politicians. So I pretty much agree with you.
Can't see how we can get out of this sorry situation.

And no doubt you would be in favour of giving up Norway's independence and becoming subservient to Sweden again. Independence has obviously caused Norway untold misery (not).

theguvnor,

"I bet I`m still running on red in ten years time! "

In the good old english tradition of smuggled brandy/tea/tobacco I fully agree with you dear boy, so long as I can buy something to make the engines run and that is cheap that's what I will do. We already keep drums at home from which we transfer into the tank every time we go down to the mooring (most w/ends in Summer). I forsee a second hand central heating tank appearing in our garden and an old boiler (which probably won't work) to "heat the workshop guv'nor" and buying in bulk (35p/litre).

Any Party which promises to pull us OUT of Europe will get my vote next time, not the current crop of lying ba******!

I'm very law-abiding normally, well, apart from storming down the motorway every day, but this hits where it hurts. I work like a dog to support my family and earn some leisure pursuits for all of us in the family, take that away and what am I working for. So.......I'll fight back any way I can, break any rule and Brown can go ***s up a rope!

Guess who's thrown his toys out of the pram?

Being British and a supplier of fuel (which I'm not - but you get my drift) I will abide by the law and supply all new red diesel at the increased rate /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This will mean increased profits for me, increased revenue for HMG and you lot (rich boaters) can go "F" yourselves.

As an aside the French & Germans will sit back and rub their hands at the demise of the "British" super powerboat industry as they watch Sunseeker, Fairline & Princess hit the rocks /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

For yer average British yottie is doesn't mean too much - maybe 10-20 quid/year - but for your average Mo-boater - gezzs, I hate to think!

Why does anyone here think that Mr Broon will oppose the extra income?

Peter.

I found a way to get out of the "sorry situation".

Leave the UK and live elsewhere. What do I miss. Now, let me think....oh yes, not one thing.
